  1. Do you drive into the city? or take the train? Sailed out of NYC 2x and loved it..but hate the drive in..we are in Binghamton NY area..

I'm not quite sure why CC sent me this link although I am booked on the Grandeur 8 NOV 19 and my name is DazyMae. Two similarities to this thread.

Anyway, I live in north east PA not too far from and east of I-81. When cruising out of Bayonne we drive to Bethlehem & take Trans-Bridge Bus Lines to the port. It's about $42 RT for seniors pp & parking is free for the 1st 3 days. After that it's $5 a day. In your case and ours, come to think of it, it would split your trip in half as it is 1.5 hours to the port & a very easy bus drive. Your luggage is transported to your cabin from the bus. Sooo easy.

From your neck of the woods it's south on I-81 and east on Rt 22 to the Lehigh Int'l Airport (ABE) where you'd pick up the bus. About 1.5 hours from Binghamton.

Just thought I'd share since we are "neighbors".

Just got off the Adventure out of Bayonne & we'll be on the Anthem again in late SEP.

I just realized I have to update my signature. Duh! Safe travels.

  2. We were on the Grandeur a few years ago on the same deck as the Centrum (4?), oceanview, port side about 3 or 4 cabins forward. We too, were concerned about the noise level. It was a non issue. Didn't here a thing from the bar or the band. Actually, the Centrum was so close that we used it as our living room.

I can't imaging that Deck 7 would have any sound issues either. Do enjoy! I hope to get back to the Grandeur after its refurbishing in FEB '18.

  3. We are watching too. Seems a bit boring. They seem to feature the drama about late arrivals, cancelled excursions, and food issues. Wish they would show more of the ship, including public areas and cabins (from thr smallest inside to the best suite and some in between).

Although, I don't find this series boring I do agree w/you about seeing more public spaces and especially the cabins. That is where my interests lie.

  4. I guess I am a "follow-the-rules" kind of girl. If there is a "dress code", abide by it OR do away with it. One would think that since we are Adults we should know how to dress appropriately.

I would not allow anyone in my home at my dinner table to go shirt-less or wear a hat. Rule of the House. Don't like it, eat somewhere else!

And again - I would expect my husband to dress in long pants/collared shirt for dinner on a cruise in the main dining room because that is what we would do when we go out to dinner at home. He would wear shorts and a T-shirt if we were going to a casual bar or beach place. And we do live at the shore.

I was a middle school teacher and had to deal with student dress code every day - I do not want to battle that on a vacation;)

I too am a rule follower so if I'm not willing to dress according to the printed rules I will eat in the Windammer. Another thing besides eating w/a hat on is a female "combing" her hair in any kind of eatery. Hair flies and I don't want or need anyone else's hair in my meal. Bad manners personified. My grandmother would cringe. Just saying.

  5. To some, shorts are "eye pollution".

    Truism Bob,

Personally, I think a nice pair of chinos long or short w/ a collared shirt is both comfortable and attractive. Is this not what one would be wearing if one was golfing? Hardly getting dressed up when one is on vacation!

  6. Got the prices for 2015.

    Transportation passes are

    One day $19

    two day $31

    Three day $44

Children under 12, I believe, are half price.

Cash fair for one person is $5 but it has to be in coins. The bus machines don't accept dollar bills. So it gets pretty heavy carrying enough quarters to make $5 a person one way.

They sell books of tickets in Hamilton that have 15 tickets in each book. The price is $37.50 per book and several people can use the tickets out of each book. The tickets are good for both the bus and the ferry. If you got to Hamilton and purchase two books for a total of 30 tickets, the four of you could take 7 one-way rides on either the buses or a ferry but you have to get to Hamilton first. They have not sold these books at the Dockyard in the past.

So, if you paid cash fair of $5 each and got to Hamilton and bought two books of tickets, the total cost would be $20 to Hamilton and two books of tickets $75.00, it would be $95 for four people and you would have the 7 rides from the tickets and one ride from cash so that would be 8 rides or four round trips from the Dockyard and back. Does this make any sense to you? I hope it does. If not, ask again.

If you take the Ferry to St. George, you can walk to a lot of things from there that are free and just walking around, you can see and learn a lot about Bermuda.

Are you referring to US dollars or Bermudian dollars or are they the same?

If we want to get the ferry/bus pass 2 or 3 day do we have to go to Hamilton to get it? If so, that too would have to be factored in w/the pass fees.

  7. Hi all! Sorry to intrude on your roll call and hope you had a great time. We are on the LOS Southern Caribbean on 1/13/14 and I have an ODD question maybe someone can answer. We were upgraded today from OS to a Deluxe with Balcony (and am pleased with that). I noted that our cabin - Deck 6 last on port side - is marked "obstructed". When I googled the cabin number on the Legend, it brings up layouts of the cabin as no balcony. I know the LOS was retrofitted last year and maybe cabins converted to balconies. But I'm curious what the obstruction is. Is anyone still on this Roll Call familiar with rear balcony cabins on your cruise and might have answer?

    Steve

    Steve,

I hope you get an answer as I am also on Deck 6 but have an aft cabin. I have been curious about the outside cabins. I couldn't tell if they have balconies or not. I also wondered what an "obstructed" view means. In any event, congrats on your upgrade.

    Happy New Year, too!

  8. Thanks.

I used a combination of pictures from my Nikon D5100, my phone and a few pictures that I scanned.

I used the MyPublisher software to create the book. Primarily because they had a half off coupon through today. :D

I also like that with MyPublisher it is software I put on my computer so I get to create the whole book on my computer before uploading it to their site. It makes it handy for grabbing additional pictures at the last minute since all the uploading doesn't happen until I am done. :)

    Bill

Wow, thanks for such a quick response. Maybe someday I will be able to be as computer/picture savvy as you.

I hope I enjoy my cruise as much as I enjoyed yours. lol

    Happy cruising,

    Bobbie

  9. If anyone is interested in viewing it, I put together a coffee table book of the cruise. It beats photo albums. :D

    Bill,

What a great book! Were your pics taken w/your phone or a camera? I have a Nikon Coolpix but no camera phone. Is there a problem w/my system? Do I download my pics to my laptop to create something on Shutterfly?

I know these seem to be basic dumb questions but I am not computer literate.

  10. Since we have been through the canal 10+ times, we didn't feel the need to go anywhere else. If I were still taking a lot of photos, I would have made more of an effort. It's especially fun to be on the Promenade Deck during the raising and lowering of the ships in the locks.

We enjoyed kicking back and not being part of the crush of people forward.:D. It doesn't matter which direction you go, for the same viewing spots.

    Karen,

DH was a Merchant Marine officer so he's been through this canal 9 times. This is on my bucket list. Thanks for the hints. I will make a mental note (better still I should write them) to remember all I've learned.

    Thanks again,

    Bobbie

  11. We originally had an aft balcony booked but for cost restraints (the balcony was $6,169 we opted for an inside and ended up at $2353 total) switched to an inside and it worked well for us. I knew on canal day I was going to be all over the ship anyway. For at sea days there is not the crush of people on the pool deck as we have seen on other cruises (maybe the clientele) so we had a nice table in the shade to ourselves for most of the day.

A different perspective that at least worked for us. Just to let you know if the balcony makes it cost prohibitive there are options. :)

Course if Royal had decided to upgrade us to one of those aft balconies we certainly would not have turned them down. :D

    Bill,

We don't cruise very often (an understatement) but this is for our 50th & I've been saving for quite sometime so we could splurge. I don't see any more cruises in our forseeable future so this is it. Our first cruise, 30 years ago, was on an old HAL ship which we loved. We had an interior w/bunks. It wasn't beautiful but it did the job. This will be our second balcony. A large window works as DH sits on the sill.

I can't thank you enough for all you've done.

  12. Yes, that is also what we do, and did on this sailing. This was our second time through the canal on the aft balcony, and now I am spoiled for any other location. We had an unobstructed view, shade, and a place to sit and relax. You really can't tell from our photos whether we are coming or going. :D

So Karen, you spent the whole transit on your balcony w/the TV? You didn't go to higher/lower "ground"?

I am doing the west to east transit. Do all of you think your methods would work in this direction as well?

    Thanks for any replies.

  13. Anyone who is interested in seeing close up how the locks work and not spend a LOT of money to cruise the Panama Canal, can see it on the Erie canal in NY. We went on a cruise through one of the locks on the Erie Canal at Herkimer, NY. The cruise boat company is Erie Canal Cruises. While it is a lot smaller than the Panama Canal, it works exactly the same way. There are a few photos of the boat entering/in the lock on the web site.

It was a fun couple hours for relatively little money. I think that they are closed down for the season, but will start up again in the Spring.

Since we live in the northern part of PA doing the Erie Canal cruise is doable. I will put this on my bucket list. Thanks for the idea.

  14. Legend begin heading out into Gatun Lake.

These are employees of the Panama Canal who came aboard to handle the line connecting Legend to the mules.

Legend moves out into Gatun Lake and completes the transit through the Gatun Locks.

    Bill,

This is by far the best (and easiest for me to understand) explanation/pictorial of a canal transit that I have seen. I feel as though I have just completed the transit. We have an aft balcony so I am also planning where I should be during any particular phase. I t doesn't look like to me that the balcony is the best place to start the transit. I'm thinking more forward.

    Thank you so much.
