  1. FWIW, if you're interested, there is some excellent whale watching closer to home. We have gone whale watching in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, off the coast of Massachussetts, and saw a lot of whales. Several of them even came up alongside the boat. You can find a whale watching trip in the summer leaving from the Boston area.

  2. . . .In any event, IMO, cruising on the High Holy Days violates their spirit, which is one of introspection, reflection and repentance. Services won't make up for that.

I am also Jewish, and although not particularly observant, those were my thoughts exactly! If one is an observant Jew, then taking a cruise that encompasses Rosh Hashanah and the following 10 days leading up to Yom Kippur is certainly not in keeping with the spirit of these days. Frankly, I'm surprised that there was a rabbi on board during that time frame.

  3. It's like the cable companies that offer terrific deals only to new customers but don't offer the same to decades-long customers. It's a way of drumming up new business.

In my experience, once you cancel with the cable company and move on to another provider, the original cable company comes running to you begging for your business, offering better deals than what you originally had. I told them that if they made that offer when I asked, I probably would not have switched. Unfortunately, it appears that most cruise lines don't work that way.

  4. We like the beach club called Nachi Cocom. Cost us $55pp and includes all you can drink, lunch, pool with swim up bar, loungers, and shade.

You may also wish to post on the Cozumel forum:

We also like Nachi Cocum. Nice beach, chairs and shade included, waiter service on the beach or you can walk over to the dining area and sit at a table. The best part is that it is not crowded. They admit only 100 people per day.

  5. The direction RCCL has been going in the past few years has been very disappointing, and cutting back on live entertainment is just another example of heading in he wrong direction. For the first time in a long time, we have not taken a cruise yet this year and have no cruises planned. Cruising, especially with RCCL, just isn't what it used to be for us. The live entertainment, particularly in the pub or schooner bar, is something we really enjoy. If they do away with this, it's just another reason to look at other cruise lines.

  6. Hi Everyone

my family and I will be in Bermuda for 31st October and 1st November. My dad is 76 years old and the other two people who will be going on the tour are aged between 29 and 43 years old.

we are looking at doing a tour of the island, where we can take photographic stops and enjoy learning the history of the island. My dad cannot swim so snorkelling and diving experiences are really out the window as we want to do things as a family.

our recent booking has disappointed me and told me he did not have our names ... is there anyone available so late on?

We are in Bermuda from 10 am until 12 pm the following day

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Several years ago when we took our future daughter-in-law on her first trip to Bermda, we wanted to show her as much as possible in the most efficient and economical way. We used a taxi driver recommended on CC (unfortunately he has since retired) and did about an 8 hour tour. We were able to go to each location we wanted to show her, and also went to a couple of places suggested by our driver. We were able to cover all of Bermuda, from one end to the other, spending as much time as we wanted to at each location. We finished the day in Hamilton, and after strolling around there for a while, took the ferry back to the dockyard.

I would suggest that you do some homework and make a list of places you would like to go and discuss it with the driver. Don't just leave it up to him.

  7. Hi everyone, DH and I are pretty loyal Princess cruisers, but they don't visit Bermuda, so we need to branch out.

Realizing that opinions are just that, and everything is subjective, I'm looking for direction in terms of which cruise line? So far, I've looked at HAL's Veendam, going to pass on that one. Considering Celebrity Summit, though wish they docked in Hamilton. It seems like very few ships dock there because of the size restrictions.

DH and I enjoy a mix of beach time and sight seeing, shopping, bars, so I'm not sure whether the Naval Dockyard or Hamilton is more preferable.....thanks in advance for any advice!

We have cruised to Bermuda many times, and the decision between docking in Hamilton or the Dockyard is a no brainer! Hamilton, hands down! So convenient to all areas of Bermuda.

  8. Sorry Merion Mom but according to Vicky Freed the majority of passengers did not like it. The number of complaints was overwelming.

Royal Caribbean reads every comment form submitted and was overwelmed by the number that did not like it.

I have sailed with DD several times and did not like it but it did not turn me off of sailing with Royal Caribbean..

Agree! The powers that be are going to make decisions based on feedback from the passengers, and I'm sure this decision was not made without giving it substantial thought by corporate. We tried DD on Quantum and did not like it at all. We let them know our feelings on the survey, and I also followed that up with a more detailed letter explaining why we did not care for DD. Apparently, the MAJORITY of passengers did not like it either. So, does that make the MINORITY who do like it "whiners" for voicing their opinions? Let's try to not resort to name calling when disagreeing with others' opinions.

  9. Hi, anyone have any restaurant recommendations? Looking for more of a local flare than something geared towards the tourists. Not looking for 5 Star dining, a hole in the wall is fine as long as the food is good. Hamilton, St. George...........wherever. Thanks in advance.

During a stay at the Fairmont Southampton, when we wanted to venture away from the hotel restaurants, We've enjoyed meals, with a local flair at:

The dining room at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse

In St Georges - White Horse Pub and also Wahoos

    Southampton Parish - Henry VIII

  10. So I too have limited AR knowledge -- there are various types of revenue, correct? Earned, deferred, booked. All are "usable revenue"??

    Thank you in advance Charlie.

A refundable deposit most closely resembles deferred revenue, and would show up in the liability section of a balance sheet. It doesn't get reported as income until all events have occurred for the company to have earned it. That being said, the company can do whatever it wants with the cash, if that is what you mean by "usable".

  11. Must have a lot of money or great cashflow to tie up so much in deposits, albeit refundable, that you know you won't use. You can play the game, or not. Royal loves it because they get to use the float however they want and often times resell the room at an even higher rate.

I'm not a CPA but isn't a held deposit booked as a liability until such time as it becomes non-refundable? Either way, it's up to RCI to use how it wishes so long as it can meets it obligations to refund within XYZ timeframe.

There are a lot of policies I don't necessarily agree with, but Royal allows people to game the system, so as far as I am concerned if you want to put up the money, it is fair game.

You are correct regarding the accounting for REFUNDABLE deposits.

But you might confuse troykahack by using words like "float" on a cruise forum.

  12. Great addition. This was talked about on here a while ago and a lot of people expressed interest in this type of food. Even better, no upcharge. Some of the attraction of the famous NY delis is the abundance of meat where you can actually have multiple sandwiches/meals. Not really necessary on a ship so a smaller regular sandwich is fine. Hard to mess this up and I think it will be good.

From what I saw on the video, it hardly resembles NY deli food.

As stated previously, they don't even appear to use the right kind of bread.

That being said, the same people who think that stuff offered in Sorrentos is pizza will probably accept Royal Carribean's version of NY deli.

  13. At least in Manalapan, you have some decent kosher style delis around. Up here in Morris County, not so much. I could go to Nana's or Eppes Essen in Livingston from work, but I sorely miss a really good deli.

Here in NJ, there is also a place called Harold's. I know that some of their locations have closed, but they also had the huge deli sandwiches, and served about 1/2 a loaf of good rye on the table so that you could make multiple sandwiches out of the meat.

I love Katz's. Maybe it's the name (being a Katz myself) but to me, that's real Jewish deli!

We occasionally go to Harold's (in the Edison area?). When we go with another couple, the 4 of us usually share a sandwich and a knish, and often have leftovers to take home.

  14. If a ship docks in Manhattan at 8:00, is there enough time to make an 11:00 o'clock flight out of Newark?

Tha Magic 8Ball says, "not likely."

As a New Yorker, I would answer -

    Is it possible - yes

Is it probable - probably not

Would I go for it - no

Traffic, even early on a weekend, can be very unpredictable. If it Is raining, that will slow things down even more.

The security lines at EWR can be horrific - been there, done that too many times.

  15. We have cruised with John and Katrina and consider them the ABSOLUTE BEST cruise director and activities manager team in the fleet.

Their skills, experience, dedication, and passion for providing for their guests the best cruise possible is unmatched.

They are not wild and crazy ... They are classy, visible, and approachable.

Absolutely agree! We have cruised with them only once (on Song of America many years ago) and thought they were great! We would love to cruise with them again if the timing & itinerary work for us.

  16. I'm among the minority who prefer Portofino to Giovanni's Table. I'm really glad that I've got an opportunity in October to get one last taste of Portofino before it fades away completely.

I'm with you. Having dined at both, I liked Portofino's much better. IMHO, Giovanni's Table was like "Olive Garden of the Seas".
