  1. Wow, that's terrible to hear about the passenger drowning at Las Palmas. Sorry to hear you had such a poor experience. When I was in Roatan a few years ago, I took a taxi to West End near Tabyana Beach (didn't pay to go to the resort) and had great snorkeling within a short distance from the shore. I would definitely recommend that.

Thanks. Will keep that in mind next time.

  2. I completely disagree with this response.

Ultimately it's up to you to decide whatever you think is the perfect way to propose. And whatever you choose I wish you nothing but happiness.

    However,

Please do NOT think the ports are unsafe, the last thing I would hope you would do (if you propose prior to a port) is have your fiancé take her new engagement ring off!!!!

If you are smart and watch your surroundings, you will be fine. Unless you are going on some crazy zip line or underwater adventure where you might possibly damage it. The ports are fine, and every twenty feet there is a jewelry store, and thousand of passengers buying expensive jewelry and watches.

Be smart, you will be fine. I wish you all the best.

Whoa, hang on there, Truth Can Hurt. That's quite a leap to assume my agreeing with Coraic meant the port itself was unsafe. If you read what Coraic said about the uncertainty of what would be where, etc, I was talking about the ring getting lost, not stolen. I am well aware that robberies of passengers in port are rare. Between the local performers, the photographers dressed like pirates, the lines for excursions, the people passing out ads disguised as maps, etc, etc, things are pretty chaotic getting off the ship & a ring can easily get misplaced.

  3. Don't think we could ever go to the now of the ship on RCCL, but we could fake it on one of the upper decks. Not anymore though as there are very tall plexiglass windows all around now.

There was a steam room &/or sauna in the women's locker room on the left side of the gym entrance. I didn't use them, but it didn't look like there was a charge. I'm assuming the same set-up is on the men's side, but I can't say for sure.

    Hope this helps!

  4. Was there one week ago today (7/9/2015) & do NOT recommend it. There is no free shuttle, but we did take the Las Palmas Beach Express excursion from the ship. $26 got you round trip shuttle to Pirate Bay, a lounge chair & a glass of melon punch. It also got me a case of gastrointestinal distress & for another family on our excursion, a life-shattering tragedy when one of the men drowned.

I'm pretty confident my problem was from what looked like a pipe going from the restrooms down into the water. The man may have left the beach with his life 1) if the roped off swimming area hadn't gone so far from shore 2) if there had been water rescue equipment available. There wasn't even a boogie board or a rope with a ring anywhere. 3) if there had been a lifeguard or even an employee to help the man when he got into trouble - Instead the FAMILY had to go out to get him. 4) if the paramedics had the equipment needed to help. There wasn't an AED available even after the ambulance and doctor arrived.

  5. She'll be seeing the pictures of her proposal for the rest of your lives so do it the 2nd night which is formal night. The first night, no one looks good, especially if your luggage hasn't come to your cabin early enough to change for dinner.

There are several specialty restaurants on board & you could work a deal out with the hotel director, food & beverage manager or even through Guest Services if you're thinking about putting the ring in a dessert. Chops has really good meat like veal chops & steak, or there's Izumi if you're more into sushi. Sabor (Mexican food) & Giovanni's Table (Family-style Italian) might not be as romantic as Chops is. Chops does cost an extra $25 per person & might be hard to get the photographer there on Formal Night.

You could always work out the details ahead of time with your Head Waiter (if he doesn't introduce him or herself the first night, ask your waiter to point him/her out). The Head Waiter can help you get champagne ordered, a photographer there, special dessert, etc. - just don't forget to give him or her an extra tip at the end of the cruise. Good luck!

  6. I just got off the Navigator Sunday (7/12/2015) & it is soooo much nicer than the Navigator was when I sailed on her 3 years ago. The teen girls traveling with me have only cruised on Freedom class ships & they loved it as well. Pretty confident you'll enjoy your trip.

  7. I may have, but I haven't yet unpacked everything. We got off the ship Sunday (7/12/2015) but the teen girls I was traveling with used almost every Compass in the room to pack their souvenirs.

Our itinerary was Cozumel, Belize, Roatan. One week ago today, we were in Roatan when one of our fellow passengers drowned while on our excursion to Pirate Bay. Was looking at the pictures I took that day & it is painful to see him so alive & happy with his family when I know how devastating what would happen in less than an hour from that moment would be to all of them.

  8. Just got off the Navigator & yes, the Diamond Lounge on Deck 14 has an espresso machine...but it broke the first day. Hong, the Diamond concierge, told us we could use our SeaPass to get a cappuccino or latte at the Starbucks on Deck 5 for no charge. Since I'm Diamond Plus, I just got my espresso in the Concierge lounge.

  9. I just returned yesterday from a cruise on the Navigator of the Seas. I am an avid snorkeler & bring my own gear as I prefer to go in excursions where I won't be forced to wear a floatation device while snorkeling close to shore. The Las Palmas Beach Express excursion touted two shipwrecks at Pirate Bay, but when I went last Thursday, I never saw them nor the reef our excursion guide spoke about. The water was extremely shallow, even several yards from shore & had only a lot of plants that I kept hitting with my hands while swimming.

It may have been deeper farther out, but as an experienced snorkeler, I don't go more than 20-30 yards from shore unless there's a lifeguard or a guide to help if I run into trouble - this excursion had neither.

Tonight I noticed that the excursion I took is no longer listed as an option on Royal Caribbean's website, most likely because a fellow passenger drowned on this excursion the same day I was there. If it shows up again, it isn't good for anyone interested in snorkeling.

  10. Took an excursion there because the snorkeling was supposed to be great - it was NOT! I had my own equipment which was good because they had no rentals. The water was really shallow & all I could see were the plants I kept hitting with my hands while swimming. The amazing reef the excursion guide told us about may have been further out at the end of the roped off swimming area, but I'll never know because another person on the excursion drowned in that area right after I left.

Apparently NOT ONE of the employees went into the water to help the man & it fell to his family to haul his body back to the beach. There was no water rescue equipment, not even a boogie board to help get him back to shore. There were no AEDs or any other life-saving equipment, & when the EMTs finally got there, they didn't have any of the equipment the doctor who came to help needed to help the man.

Frankly, the reports of the lack of action on the part of the staff doesn't surprise me. The excursion guide spent the entire time he was there sitting at the bar talking on his cell phone, the bartender had his back to the water, the gift shop attendant was in a building behind the open air restaurant & a man dressed like a pirate was straightening up the empty lounges on the beach when he wasn't busy taking and delivering food orders in the open-air restaurant.
