I agree with renting an electric car....it is the best way to get around. I would rent from Sunshine Scooters....they people are super friendly and they have great rates.
Thinking of renting an electric car for Key West but wonder about parking. Is there parking on Duval Street and at Mallory Square? Is it paid parking or is there easy places to just pull over without an issue? I noticed on the website you linked it says they offer free parking which got me thinking. Also do they pick you up at the dock and do you return the car to the dock when you're done?

I used to get my passport stamped all the time. New pages are not that expensive. I don't do it as much anymore, but my Grandkids like theirs stamped so I leave it at the pursers desk and they get it stamped and then call me the last night to pick up their passports.
When you leave your passport with the purser, do you not need it for re-entry back on the ship when you're done with your day at the port? Do you just use your sign & sail card to re-enter the ship?

When we were in St. Augustine we couldn't resist stopping to have a sip of water from the Fountain of Youth http://www.fountainofyouthflorida.com/ Its a cool park and fun to say you've done it. lol

Sailing Carnival Freedom in September. So if I buy a bottle of Jamaican rum while in Jamaica, will I be able to take it back to my room or will they hold it til the end of the cruise? Similarly, if I buy a couple bottles (20 oz) while at port, can I take those back to my room? Am I able to buy a bottle of wine in say Key West and bring that back to my room.

We booked with knowjamaica tours. We chose a private tour so we could customize our visit and see the things on the island we wanted to see. But they also offer a reasonably price tour to James Bond Beach, Shopping and a Local School (which I think would be cool to see). With our private tour option, I'm still researching since where we go will be up to us - I like that flexibility and it may work well for someone with young kids. :)

What a great thread! I wrote down so many "free" things I want to do when I'm there in September. Thanks for all the suggestions.

So glad I asked about the tendering as it seems to be very important when planning on whether to do an excursion independently or through the cruise line. Thanks for the replies.

If you are a traveler with physical limitations, make sure you find out if you are docked or tendering to the pier. Tendering can be challenging.
What does tendering entail? And how do you find out if the port is docked or tendered? We're going on Carnival - Freedom; September to Key West, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios. Does tendering take more time to get back and forth to the ship?

I'm new to the site, and have been reading this thread. Love all the tips! One question that struck me, and it may be kind of stupid...I see it say bring half the clothes, double the money. Aside from souvenirs and things at the port, what else would you need money for?

After researching online, and based on your glowing recommendation, I have reserved an electric car with sunshine scotters inc. I spoke to one of the owners yesterday and she was so lovely. Took the time to explain things to me and even offered some advice and recommendations. I also went to google maps to scan the street views to see where parking may be available and now see that its moreso on the side streets, and shouldn't be a problem. Also we'll be there on a Monday, in fairly low season, with no other ships at port, so there shouldn't be huge crowds also trying to get the limited parking. I'm super excited and by having an electric car I'll be able to see more of the area than I probably would have been able to do on my bum foot.
