AT&T cell phones in Alaska? Calling cards?

A friend is leaving 6/23 for a Seward-Vancouver Inside Passage cruise. He has an AT&T cell phone plan and is curious if it will work from the ship (I assume he means in Juneau, Sitka, Skagway, Ketchikan). Also, will his AT&T International Calling Card be of use there, as well as in Vancouver.

I told him I'd ask the smartest people in the world. So here I am.

I took an Alaskan cruise 4 years ago, and was able to use my cell phone (Verizon service plan) with no problems from the back of the ship!

Someone told me his Verizon cell would not work in Anchorage, which sounds real odd to me.

Anyway, any AT&T cell users out there who can give me advice?
