Unable to change dates of cruise.

We tried to change a cruise that we had booked for 27th March, to a more expensive cruise starting 10th April. We were told

that this was not possible. Why? What is the problem?

Welcome to Cruise Critic !

I see you are from the UK, but here in the states, for most every cruise line... you cannot make changes when you are past final payment. I'm all but certain that's the reason.
