chasm4u Posted February 5, 2011 #1 Share Posted February 5, 2011 What should we expect to see walking from the port and which way should we go?

CoralReef Posted February 6, 2011 #5 Share Posted February 6, 2011 Treasury Building: architecturally interesting with its large rotunda. Customs House for the days of sugar wealth. The Circus: classic British-style roundabout, with shopping. St. Kitts was a British colony until 1983. Independence Square: built in 1790 for slave auctions and council meetings. Look at the buildings nearby... see the tiny barred windows at ground level? That's where the slaves were kept. St. Kitts was a crossroads for the slave trade, with planters coming from nearby islands to buy merchandise fresh off the boat here. Church of the Immaculate Conception: from the French Catholic days. St. George's Church: Has been a French Catholic church, a British Anglican church, was destroyed and rebuilt at least 5 times. paul58 Posted February 8, 2011 #7 Share Posted February 8, 2011 The churches are open to the public. Some other interesting places: the National Museum-very close to the pier, the public market on the Bay Road, lunch at either Circus Grill or Ballahoo, both overlook the Circus- they are on the second floor. M&M Mousers Posted February 26, 2011 #10 Share Posted February 26, 2011 When we went on the self guided walking tour of Basseterre, St. Kitts, we stopped at Ziggy's Bar and Snackett on Central Street. Each of the four of us had a different dish - the daily Cook Up being our favorite. I would highly recommend Ziggy's for excellent local food.
