Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz in Bergen - anyone stayed here recently?

Recommended Posts

We’re coming into Bergen from London on September 3, using our own travel arrangements, before departing on Sept. 4th for Viking Ocean’s “In the Wake of the Vikings” transatlantic crossing. Our hotel for the night of Sept. 3rd is the Thon Rosenkrantz. Has anyone stayed there recently? Any idea how far it is from Viking’s usual departure pier?

We stayed there on May 25 prior to boarding our ship on the 26th for the Viking Homelands. It is a lovely hotel with a great breakfast and excellent service. It is close to where the Viking ships dock, but because we didn't want to haul all our luggage on cobblestones, we opted for taxis. The walk would be about 10 minutes. It is also close to the funicular where we caught the 8 am first ride of the day on the 26th and shared it with only 6 other people. We spent a short time taking photos and then took the 8:30 ride down and had breakfast at the hotel. By then the cars were full. The other thing we did before boarding the ship on the 26th was take a public bus to Grieg's villa for a lunchtime concert. The hotel kept our luggage, and we taxied to the ship after returning from the concert. We really liked the location of the hotel, and it's not too far from the train station. We arrived from Oslo after a 2-day Nutshell trip with only small bags, because we had arranged with a porter service to take our larger bags. We got lost finding the hotel, but it wasn't that long a walk. The hotel is located well for enjoying the Bryggen with its shops, sidewalk cafes, and water views. It's about 15 minutes walk from the Visitor Center. Enjoy your cruise!

Hi, Colyn, We booked the Nutshell tour through Fjord Tours. We decided to stay overnight in Flam and booked the Flamsbrygga Hotel on their website. Hotels can also be booked through Fjord Tours. When we booked the tour, we were able to say that we wanted to do it in two days, and somewhere we could say that we would book our own hotel in Flam. We thought that town was the perfect place to stay, and the travel days were enjoyable and not too long. If you book at the Flamsbrygga Hotel, be sure to specify a room with a balcony or patio. I made a mistake, and we ended up with a "budget" room with no view at the top of tiny stairs. Fortunately they had an unexpected cancellation, and we were able to move to a room with a patio and view of the fjord. I made the Nutshell reservations 6 months in advance, and while we received a confirmation, Fjord Tours couldn't book the train until 2 months before, I think. We then received a confirmation of train time, dates, etc., which we used at the train ticket office in Oslo to pick up the tickets. It was easy. Booking the porter service was a very good move and worth every penny, but the porter service picks up and drops off at only certain hotels in Oslo and Bergen. We had to cancel and book other hotels that were on their list. They were great - punctual and dependable - no problems with our taking 2 days for the trip - they delivered it to the Rosenkrantz the evening of the day they picked it up, and it was in the hotel's luggage room, when we arrived the next day. I can't recommend the trip enough! Carol
