It is against the law to sunbath topless (or nude, for that matter) anywhere in the Cayman Islands.

What a shame! It's time for SuperClubs to build a resort there with a private island for all us sun worshippers who don't like tanlines....

 

If you're cruising on Carnival, then you could stay on board on the funnel deck to get your sun since it's a topless deck, then go into town if you want to see any sights or shop.

And who don't seem to care that their skin will look like an old cowboy boot when they get older or if they get skin cancer.

 

I don't think it is a "shame" that their culture is more conservative regarding clothing optional. It is the way things are there and to try to force a change would be disrespectful and insensitive, IMO.

 

If it is clothing optional you are looking for, then you should sail on an Eastern itinerary that stops at some of the islands that have a strong connection with France, such as St. Martin (not the Dutch St. Maarten). There are also clothing optional resorts on Jamacia.

I think the Cayman Islands are missing out on a huge chunk of change they could use while rebuilding the island by not being open to change. They don't have to change any laws, just allow a private resort. I frequent Jamaica, St. Martin, and other Caribbean islands and have only visited Grand Cayman once. The only thing keeping my from going back is that there isn't a resort to accomodate my wishes. Maybe I'll build one :) There would be plenty of investors knocking on my door, that's for sure :p

Again, you are entitled to your opinion, but not everyone agrees with you. Plenty of people do not want to be exposed to your values.

Again, that is your opinion. With constant exposure to the suns harmful UV rays, how long will it stay that way?

I don't. There are plenty of other islands that have the kind of resort you desire, as you have already listed some of them.

They don't have to change any laws, just allow a private resort.

They would have to change laws to allow what you suggest. Public nudity is against the law. All the beaches are public, by law. I expect you'd want your resort on a beach.

Then I respectfully suggest that you do go back to the islands that allow the kind of resort that will accommodate your wishes.

wow it's sad that there's reactions such as those, I've traveled all of my life on cruises and I was also raised by my conservative christian parents but for all of their conservative values, they are very comfortable with nudity and we were always taught that an apendage is an apendage and any body part can be sexual in nature taken in context.

 

That all being said, I am further saddened that there are people who don't understand that nudity shouldn't be offensive to anyone in the context of naturism so the people of the Caymans who happily hold offshore banking for people and companies who don't want to deal with pesky taxes shouldn't have such an issue with a private location for naturists

 

Finally I respectfully acknowlege that UV rays are harmful to the body just as well as they are helpful (the body gets vitamin D from the sun)

As stated by others, and without passing judgment on anyone's preferences, public nudity is against the law in the Cayman Islands. All beaches are public in Cayman, by law. Ergo, no nude or topless beaches.

 

Cayman also does not offer casino gambling. Gambling is illegal here. There are those in the local community who would like to change these laws and have proposed doing so as a budgetary measurment. Proponents circulated a petition which failed to garner enough signatures to force a referendum. The petition was offered up to the legislature. The matter is under consideration. I suppose anyone interested in changing public nudity laws would be free to circulate a petition.

 

Finally, I am not quite sure what one writer meant by naturist tourism providing "a huge chunk of change they could use while rebuilding the island." What exactly is Cayman meant to be rebuilding at this point?

 

Repairs from Hurricane Ivan (Sept 2004) are as complete as can be - barring the few ongoing disputes with insurers. The government recently signed Memorandums of Understanding in regards to constructing a new cruise berthing facility and a $1+ billon medical center. Cayman continues developing without revenue from naturist tourism.

Just to add an update regarding the 'funnel deck' on Carnival posted by pholter -- what happened in 2005 doesn't happen anymore. ☺☺

WE have been to Grand Cayman 3 times last time in Sept. of 2009.

 

The Hotel to the Left of the Mariott as you face the Maroitt does tolerate discredet type - Topless it is a Europeen type Hotel and most of the Guests were German each time we were there.

It is done very discreet and not flaunted.
