Motion on the ship from NO to Mexico

We just booked Triumph from NO to Mexico in March 2010. This is our first cruise in the Gulf. Im a bit sensative to motion on ships but its never been a huge problem (thanks to Bonine and ginger). The worst we've had is 9ft swells on evening going to Bahamas. Was just wondering if there is usually any difference between Gulf vs Atlantic cruises. I also read some posts about the Mississippi being a bit rocky. I know everyone had a different opinon of "bad/rough" seas but Im just trying to mentally prepare myself for what to expect. THANKS!!

I would recommend taking some sea sickness pills. I was on the NCL Sun about 4 years ago. The cruise was at the end of Oct. The trip down and back from Costa Maya was rough with about 14 foot plus swells. After we left Costa Maya it was smooth sailing to Belize & Guatemala. You can never predict what the weather will be light. I didn't realize that N.O was so far away from the gulf. It took us to about 1am to hit open water. In the morning, some people asked us if the boat listing over woke us up. The shops reported that items no secured down like perfume bottle got broken.

Not to scare you but they put sickness bags out on all the stair wells. I am like you and sensitive to ships rolling. However, with the sea sickness pills, I was never sick. Make sure that you take the non-drowsy form otherwise you will be very sleepy.

I am on the NCL Spirit in Nov and am hoping for better weather.

We have never had a problem with sea sickness but we always start taking ginger a couple of days before the cruise and take it everyday and night. We also take 1/2 a tablet of Bonine in the morning and at night of the cruise. We don't want to take any chances. We have gone on 4 cruises to Mexican ports and only one of them had kind of rough seas.

Three years ago, we sailed the Elation from Galveston, it was equipped with" Stabilizers" for anti-roll.Returning to port after a smooth cruise, We hit a strong Thunderstorm, that did make the ship ROCK a lot. You will have notice in time to take a pill or two extra. JY.

I was on Fantasy last October. The Mississippi has a lot of bends and twists getting to the gulf, so yes, the ship will rock a bit. I tend to feel motion more than most on a ship so Bonine is a must. I also take my sea bands which just adds a bit more stability to me. The water should be calmer once you hit the gulf. For some reason, the trip up the mississippi on the way home isn't as bad. Maybe you just get used to it!

Thanks for the heads up. For some reason I was thinking it being a river, there wouldnt be any wake/waves/tide, therefore no real motion of the ship. I didnt realize that the ship just navagating the curves would create rocking.

We've sailed out of Galveston into the Gulf many times. We've sailed during Hurricane Season at the end of September and there were NO waves...it was flat! In the winter months you do have the cold fronts that blow through and we've experienced 18 ft. seas. The Atlantic can be rough too and our first cruise was out of Ft. Lauderdale and the seas were very rough. So, you never know what Mother Nature has in store for you!

You will feel some of the turns as you travel down the Mississippi.
