MDR dinner question - have you ever...

Recommended Posts

For many cruises we have always had very good tablemates. We have had a few odd ones, (one couple who sat erect as a plate was placed in front of them, then in unison bent their heads down within a inch of the food to smell it), and one guy who was the self-proclaimed King of the World. DW and I just smile and keep moving ahead. We like to sit at tables with several couples so that if we have an "unconventional couple" we do have others to converse with.

Only once did we change tables. We were assigned to a table of ten with eight members of a family from Mexico City. None of them spoke any English and my 3 years of high school Spanish is quite bad. They were very nice but we were all uncomfortable at not being able to communicate as well. Even the waiter was astounded that we were seated at this table. After a very nice, but stressful first evening DW and decided to ask to be moved to another table. At the new table we were paired with a French couple who spoke no English as well! Trying to put the best face on the situation we decided to stay at what we called the French table but our French table mates only returned once during the week.

BTW, we did go back to our first table mates, secured a Spanish speaking waiter to translate and explained the situation to them. They were very gracious and we actually enjoyed each other's company at Boleros a few nights later. We were honestly very torn... we did not want to be percieved as "ugly Americans" but at the same time we wanted to fully enjoy the company of our table mates for the week. It was a hard decision to move, but we wanted to ensure we did not insult that fine family.

The bottom line is follow your instincts and change tables if you feel you should.
