LounVal Posted December 12, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 12, 2009 The bar at Maho has a surf board sign listing what time the planes are coming and going and the type of plane. Is there somewhere you can get that info before getting to St Maarten to help plan your day?? We stopped there first on our last visit and didn't see any large jets. I'm seeing posts that say the big jets start more in the early afternoon.

m steve Posted December 12, 2009 #3 Share Posted December 12, 2009 (edited) and see what their schedule is. Most flights arrive about the same time so the customs people only have to work a couple of hours. If you ever flew in you would find a terrible traffic jam thrying to get into terminal. Stacey779 Posted December 13, 2009 #4 Share Posted December 13, 2009 We're planning on heading over to Maho as well. Is it easy to get a cab back? Are they waiting for you there or do we need to arrange a pick up time?
gtaylor Posted December 13, 2009 #5 Share Posted December 13, 2009 and see what their schedule is. Most flights arrive about the same time so the customs people only have to work a couple of hours. If you ever flew in you would find a terrible traffic jam thrying to get into terminal. That's just silly. The airport handles some 200 flight operations a day, typically from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. And, for the record, those aren't Customs people, they're Immigration people. To the Original Poster, I would recommend that you check out the website Flightstats.com, especially as you get close to your cruise. The week (or two) prior to your day of visiting St. Maarten check the flights coming in on that day of the week. The airport code is SXM. Here's a shot of the flights for this coming Monday afternoon. (click) When you get to the Flightstats display, clicking on the flight number will give you detailed information about that flight, including an English-language description of the equipment, i.e. DHT on the page = De Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter. gary
gtaylor Posted December 13, 2009 #6 Share Posted December 13, 2009 If there's not a taxi waiting at the bar (likely), they should be able to call one for you. Most bars have 'relationships' with taxi drivers. The absolute worst case would be to walk out to the hotel/casino complex there on airport road, a few hundred yards. I, personally, wouldn't want to be tied into a pre-arranged time. I might want to leave earlier or stay later than I originally planned. By the way, I would suggest that you check out Guy's Driftwood Boat Bar on the opposite side of the runway from Sunset. gary

I don't really want to have a pre-arranged time for a taxi (for the same reasons you mentioned). I haven't heard of Guy's Driftwood Boat Bar, but I will definitely check it out. I like their $2 beer special, and I'm sure my husband will too!

I was told in another thread that the big jets do not start arriving till after 1:30PM, which makes sense because the bigger flights are either inbound from the USA or Europe. Most of the other big boys usually do arrive after 1:30 PM. So get there a little after noon, scarf down something at Sunset or Guy's and then walk over to the glide path. Hi Lounval: We're in St. Martin Christmas Eve Day and I wanted the same info so I went to some of the airline websites and did some dummy bookings and found out the following: Corsair Flight 1 (747-400) from Paris Orly to SXM arrives at 13:15; Air France 488 (Airbus A-340-300) arrives from Paris Charles de Gaulle at 14:20; Delta 439 (B737 I believe) arrives from Atlanta at 15:02; and KLM 763 (MD-11) from Amsterdam arrives 17:00. You can check other airlines websites and try the same. Happy Cruising and Plane Spotting!
ewpsrp Posted December 15, 2009 #12 Share Posted December 15, 2009 My husband just showed me this beach on Youtube. How very cool. We are cruising on Freedom of the Seas in Sept. 2010. Will definitely have to check this out.

L_T Posted December 31, 2009 #20 Share Posted December 31, 2009 Ahh, there we are 31 days from now - AA from Miami at 3:26 (our reservations say 3:25, but close enough). The terminal gets really busy right after that. We'll enjoy the view from that end of the runway a few times during our vacation - still one of our fun things to do. We also enjoy watching the smaller planes come in over Grand Case to land at the French side airport.
trvlgalnguy Posted January 2, 2010 #21 Share Posted January 2, 2010 Having flown to St. Maarten, many times, since the '80's.it is amazing to see the planes come in at Maho, but the beach is so small. Also be prepared for lots of traffic,if renting a car.It is a beautiful island,Mullet Bay is a very nice beach on the Dutch side, and much less expensive to rent chairs .Orient on the French side is also a favorite, but sometimes can be very windy. As mentioned, the surfboard changes daily... here's a picture slightly more recent than the above one - from February 1, 2010. I should note that while we were there (roughly between noon and 3pm) we were also treated to a KLM 747 landing. It was not listed on the board.
