Ground Transportation in NOLA

We are flying in 2.5 days before our cruise departure and Staying at the Best Western St Christopher on Magazine & Canal. I found an airport-downtown shuttle bus operated by the public transit system for less than $2pp.

However, after speaking with a friend, she said that this was not a wise idea and we ought to just take a cab. She said that carrying suitcases on public transit would make us prime targets for a mugging.

What is the best way to get from the airport to the French Quarter?

Taking the bus may be the cheapest way, but it looks like you would have to actually take 2 or 3 buses, which dragging luggage may be a problem. Easiest way would to take a cab, I think prices are about 33 dollars, or the New Orleans shuttle bus, which was 20 dollars one way, or 38 dollars round trip.
