Bicycles or Mopeds Rentals

I wouldn't go on a moped because the highway around the island isn't in that great of shape plus we have short tropical rains here at times that will keep you on the side of the road. If you are interested in biking I would check into a guided tour- safer in numbers- from getting plowed down by a taxi trying to pass you. Or you could really relax and just rent a car and enjoy!!!And to address your question- I know there are moped rentals close to all the piers--- not sure about the bikes. And- I doubt due to the distance that many people have walked around the island ( at least not on purpose).

I'm not sure you are aware of the size of Cozumel. The shortest distance across the island is 9 miles. I have biked it to see the sunrise, but those trips are few and far between. A cruise sponsored bike tour to Chankanaab or Uvas Beach (I forget where they go) is a nice little ride. As far as mopeds go...

Please, please, please do NOT rent a scooter. Everyday here in Cozumel, people are scraped up off the roads as a result of moped accidents.

Sally's Top Ten Reasons Not to Rent a Moped:

10. Most Cozumel streets are one way, except where they aren't.

9. Most north-south streets have the right of way, except where they don't.

8. Patches of gravel appear in the most unlikely spots, making it easy to skid and topple.

7. The brakes on most of the rentals are not in "perfect" condition.

6. Beautiful seaside vistas take your breath away, and your attention off the road.

5. Many tourists have just been to Carlos 'n' Charlie's and are now behind the wheel of a car.

4. Taxis are racing to see how many fares they can transport in one day.

3. Mopeds have a short wheel base which makes them less maneuverable than, say, a motorcycle. (That's for all of you thinking that if you have a motorcycle license, a moped is a piece of cake.)

2. Mopeds do not have adequate acceleration to get you out of a potentially dangerous situation. (Again, for the motorcyclists out there, you understand what I mean.)

1. Given 2-10, a little road rash is enough to ruin any vacation. Going home in a box falls into another category.

Please be safe, spend a little more and surround yourself with a rental car. Return from your vacation in one piece. Mopeds are not an adventure, they are a danger.

Getting down from my soapbox now...

Has anyone walked to the Chankanaab SP from the Puerta Maya dock? its seems about 2-1/2 miles, ? is it safe to walk? Since sally told me the scoop on mopeds, how bout mountain bikes would be better.

Unfortunately I don't think you can rent bicycles at the pier. I've never seen a vendor available. The distance from Puerta Maya to Chankanaab is probably less than 2.5 miles, that's a high end estimate. Yes, you can walk it. It is safe in that no one will attack you. Cozumel is very safe that way. However, I believe there are stretches between PM and Chank that have no shoulder, so you'll have to be very aware of traffic.
