Upgrades at the port?

Cruised 12/12 and had booked connecting D3 balcony cabins with son, DIL and granddaughter. We knew that the cabin was probably going to be tight after the pictures were released so I started checking larger accomodations for us. There were a bunch of unbooked AS, Royal Family Balcony Suites (3) etc, so I planned to talk to the pier coordinator at FLL .

Once checked in, I walked to the far left to the pier coordinator's desk and got in line behind one other party. I could not hear what they were saying but when I approached, they were very pleasant. I explained that we had a baby in the party and we "were not aware of how small the cabins were until too late" and could they please tell me how much to upgrade to possibly a RFS. They totally nixed the idea that they could do anything...I would have to talk to guest relations onboard...they had no control over room changes.....blah, blah. I was nice but suggested that Guest Relations would simply send me back to them. Didn't work...they said there was no way they could do anything. I held the baby...I looked sad....Nothing!

Once onboard, stood in a very long line at Guest Relations (ugh) and finally spoke with someone about the upgrade...that I knew that there were available cabins, etc. She said, "Did you talk to the pier coordinator??..they are the ones to do that." So...that whole story was a bunch of baloney. Anyway, she could not do anything now, but once we sailed, she would call and let me know if anything was available. I had put my Diamond card on the counter so she knew that we were loyalty people, etc. I tried a few other ploys...but nothing. Someone did call after we sailed but said there was nothing available.

Son went back on day two and they told him they had one JS and it would be $1000 to upgrade (after he told them that we had been handed two different stories.)

So, we had no luck even though I thought I had used all the tricks learned here on CC. I even used a sweet 9 month old baby and couldn't get anyone to budge...how sad is that.

Is there a Pier Co-Ordinator at the port?

Has anyone purchased an upgrade before boarding Oasis?

Up-to-date prices?

You have a better chance of winning BIG in the Casino than getting an upgrade at the port or ship :(

We are Diamond and cruised on the Christmas cruise. We were booked in D3 cabins, but when we got to the terminal (which is very nice - well organized), we immediately went to pier coordinator and there were JS's available to upgrade to - nothing in a higher category. they did have a royal loft suite that they did not fill and used as a prize during bingo.

We upgraded our 3 D3 cabins to 3 hump JS for $2000 a cabin.

The pier coordinator was pleasant, and the transaction went quickly. In fact, we got our upgrade done as it took the family next to us just to check in.

Considering the price difference in the cabins when we booked, I was fine with the $2000. Considering the ship we were on, we had no expectation when we arrived at port and I never would have expected them to give us the rooms at no charge.

We just made final payment on our Easter cruise today. We are booked in JS's and I asked about possible upgrades. Alan, our RCCl travel agent that we work with, just laughed! I wouldn't expect many to be available in the near future.

Gee, I don't know if I'd call it sad. If you get lucky and get an upgrade, that is certainly something to enjoy. But to think that you should somehow be able to make it happen, particularly using "tricks" is a bit unreasonable.

I'm having a little trouble figuring out how a diamond C&A really didn't have an appreciation for the cabin size when booking to be honest with you.

Forgive me if this comes across as snarky, but I think it's really unreasonable to be unhappy about not getting something for free that you could have purchases either in advance, or (in the case of the JS), once on the ship.

I travel to Las Vegas a tremendous amount, and people obsess over getting upgrades there. And if the don't, they complain and complain on the message board I frequent. The rule to live by is simple: Book the category you will be comfortable with, and if you happen to get an upgrade, consider it a bonus and enjoy it. But if you book with the expectation or hope of getting an upgrade, and your enjoyment is somehow contingent on that happening, then you're only setting yourself up for disappointment.

You really misread my post and the tenor in which it was written! And you do sound quite snarky! Also, the OP asked the question about trying for an upgrade at the pier and I gave our experience about it. If you don't like the fact that people do this...well tough. Many have gotten upgrades this way in the past.

You need to re-read where I asked both the pier coordinator and guest relations "how much to upgrade?" I did not expect anything for free. Please read posts carefully before you attack someone with misinformation.

I am fully aware of how to book a cabin. I did so before there was much information as to the size and layout and before our kids decided to book and subsequently bring the baby...not that it should matter to you. I don't "expect" an upgrade and have never tried to but on this trip I knew that family cabins were available and that extra space with both mom and dad and gparents in the same area would have been nice. The JS somewhere else was not doable.

When I mentioned tricks I was referring to methods that others have used when they were checking in ....not illegal or immoral acts!

The message was that we were not even given the chance to upgrade...totally shutdown by the agents. It looks like a later poster had better luck at the pier coordinators desk where we were told that they did not handle such.

This was our experience and I told the story. I am not someone who travels to Vegas and expects free upgrades and grumbles when I don't get them. Take your admonitions back to your "Las Vegas board."

Not only are they packed, even the ones they have not sold yet (September 2010 cruise - Crown Loft Suites) have gone up $1,000 pp since we booked in August 2008 - YIKES

Whoa Deb! Take a deep breath! I never said I didn't like that people do this. I do it! I think it's crazy not to at least ask. I was simply reacting to what sounded like indignance at the fact that you "had no luck even though (you) thought (you) had used all the tricks learned here on CC. (You) even used a sweet 9 month old baby and couldn't get anyone to budge".

Furthermore, I wasn't implying that the "tricks" were immoral or wrong. I use "tricks" all the time checking into hotels. I'll be especially friendly and polite, knowing they often deal with tired rude travelers, I'll offer an expression of my gratitude for their looking, in the form of a tip.

What I won't ever do though, is be puzzled if these things don't work.

Furthermore, I think your reaction, particularly telling me to 'go back to my vegas boards', was rather petty. I certainly hope those aren't the behaviors you are modeling for what appears to be a lovely granddaughter.

You misread my post and then made me out to be a complainer about not getting something for free. I did not ask or expect something for free. I wasn't nor did I say I was indignant about not getting an upgrade. I was simply responding to someone's question about upgrades at Pier 18. It has nothing to do with free upgrades for rooms in Las Vegas, etc. I take offense at your suggestion that it in any way is the same thing. And you yourself asked for forgiveness for being snarky...so you evidently thought you might be!

I didn't tell you to go back to your Vegas boards..I told you to take your admonishment for free room complainers back there...I am not one of them.

Long story short..your comment was snarky and way off base. You do not need to intervene in something that didn't need intervention...and you certainly don't need to worry about whether I am a good role model for my granddaughter... I am.

Please use your energies on these boards to help people using your cruise experience...we don't need the Las Vegas free upgrade police.

Ummm, not to be a b*ttinski here or anything but speaking from personal experience and a written warning from the CC Board Admin folks, we must play nice or they admonish you :) Yep, I got torqued in a thread once when someone rubbed me the wrong way annnnnnndddddd, let's just say it went downhill fast. I have since learned to temper my responses even if I get miffed :D Not telling anyone what to do, not at all, just relaying my experience recently.

By the way, thanks for the 411 on getting an upgrade cause I was thinking maybe if a Skyloft was open for a decent price we might move rooms

Thanks Catlady ...by the way, I am one as well ...love my kitties!

I will not take this any further ...not worth the energy and the blood pressure.

Well, the whole upgrade thing may change with time. I do know they were toying with the ship capacity on those early sailings along with probably crew enough to cover all of the rooms probably. It does seem that the pier coordinator can give upgrades even though they told me they could not on my sailing. Who knows..maybe the policy changed with the next sailings.

Good luck...I would still try for that Sky Loft...what have you got to lose?? Pier C's desk is all the way left from the check-in area..all the way to the wall. You have to back track from there to get out of the lines and walk toward the opening to board the ship. Best embarkation ever though..really fast.

Thanks Deb, we will give it a try. Speaking of cats, DH and I have been involved in animal rescue for about 14 years so we have a Clowder of cats :D When people ask how many we have my response is always "more than average, but not enough to be newsworthy"

Well, way off topic. I am glad that you are not newsworthy but I thank you for rescuing all the lost kitties.

Just lost (died in my arms) my precious Toeby cat last year...polydactyl...6 toes on all feet and the best personality ever. Everyone loved him...UPS man...neighbors....they all asked about him. He was 18 years old. I'm still so sad about him.

So, I am down to two now....definitely not newsworthy.

I am so sorry for your loss :( We recently lost two and no matter how many you have or how long you have them, it is never easy

If you are wanting more, I can bring a couple more when we come to Florida for our cruise.;)

My bad for getting off topic.

Okay back to upgrades, anyone get a really great deal????:D
