Booking excursions at ports- Wind 4/9

We are booked on the Wind sailing on 4/9. On our Alaska cruise, we found that many excursions could be booked as you disembarked at the various ports- and for lots cheaper! Any experience with this? Also, are there things to do- other than shopping- at any of the ports, without having to take an excursion?
