Hiking: Cabo vs. Puerto Vallarta. Which is better?

We're going in March and will have a two-year-old, and we're going with friends who have a 9-month old. We want to go hiking. I've found one family-friendly hike in Puerto Vallarta, haven't looked yet in Cabo. Of course, we could pay $$ to leave our kids on the ship with a sitter and do one of the Outdoor Adventure tours that everyone raves about. But we want to make sure we know what our options are before we decide what to do with the kids.

So...which port has better hiking? Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta? Has anyone been hiking with their YOUNG kids in either of these ports?

I would chose Vallarta for hiking over Cabo. Vallarta is lush and tropical and very verdant whereas Cabo is desert. The one thing is that there really isn't hiking trails "per se" to go out on your own unless you do some research on the area and find some homemade trails to take. Like one from Boca to Las Animas or up the Rio Cuale in Vallarta.

I personally would not go hiking with small children, there isn't anything particularly amazing to see and terrain can be rough and often slippery depending where you go or when.

I would do the Outdoor Adventure and let the kids be happy and playing on the ship while you have some adult time :) Besides, the kids would probably be happier and so would you.
