want2cruiseagain Posted April 14, 2010 #1 Share Posted April 14, 2010 We have a port of call in Barcelona and would like to buy some items at the La Boqueria market. Are we restricted in bringing certain items back on the ship (cheese, olives, etc)?
CoralReef Posted April 14, 2010 #2 Share Posted April 14, 2010 The ships mostly only care whether you're bringing on alcohol. We brought back fresh figs and raspberries from Barcelona, and they couldn't have cared less. Anything you take home may be an issue with Customs at your disembarkation port, as well as your country of destination. Cured cheeses and olives are usually OK. Fresh cheese may be questionable. Meats and fresh fruit/vegetables are usually problematic. But it depends on the country-- check with their Customs website to be sure.
OttoCal Posted April 21, 2010 #3 Share Posted April 21, 2010 I know you are specifically talking about the ship, but this is my experience with airports for those flying through Barcelona. the uncured cheese & majority of the jamon can be problematic, and they do have sniffer dogs sniffing your luggage for contraband yummy items in the US airports. You'll get sent for an agricultural inspection if you get sniffed out, and may have to give up your stuff and run this risk of having been delayed long enough to miss your connecting flight. :( You can typically buy hermetically (sp) sealed packages of cheese and some kinds of jamon in the duty-free shops in the Barcelona airport and those should be OK to bring through. We have never had a problem with things like olives, olive oil, chocolate, candy. Remember if you buy alcohol in the duty free shop (or any liquid), you can take it on the plan from BCN to the US, but then may need to transfer it to your checked baggage for your connecting journey, depending on the airport you fly through.
