Progresso Geology

Greetings All!

I'll be on a cruise soon that stops in Progresso, which is just about dead center (no pun intended) of the asteroid strike that helped take out the dinosaurs. Does anyone know of anything in the way of interesting geology in the Progresso area? I'm not above collecting sand/soil to inspect under a microscope for shocked quartz after I get home if I have to. (I've got the customs form bookmarked!) Any help is appreciated!

If I remember right the site is underwater not to far out from the beach? At least that's what the tour guide told us one of our trips there.........

I thought I read somewhere that the Yucatan sits on a limestone shelf??? I think that is so cool....don't know much about geology, but love the history part of it.

That limestone shelf is the reason for the 4.5 mile pier at Progreso.
