Booking suggestions for Legend for New Year Cruise

Our family is planning a cruise during the holidays and it looks like it will be the Legend out of Tampa for a New Year's cruise. So far we will need 5 cabins, wth the possibility of three more families. If they decide to come we'll need 8 cabins. We've all been on Carnival before, some are seniors, and two live in Florida. Wondering with all the different rates available, would it be better for each family to book individually, go through an agent and see if there is a group rate, or contact Carnival and book through them? Book now or wait to see if they have a holiday sailing sale, seems I've seen that before. Thanks.
