Smoking onboard QV now

spent over 100 dollars on a few cigars on the first day of the iberian trip last week but never got to enjoy them onboard. When they decided to ban smoking in the casino, did Cunard not realise the Cigar lounge would fill up with cigarette smokers?? There was not a seat to be had most evenings as the lounge was filled with cigarette smokers. Managed to get a seat around midnight one evening but it really felt like being at a bus-stop, (constant coming and going from nervous chain-smoking cigarette puffers), not a lounge! Can't smoke cigars on balcony so no point buying cigars onboard cunard in future, nowhere to smoke them.

Plewes,

I am sorry for you and others who previously enjoyed a cigar in Churchills before the ban on cigarette smoking. Those who smoke cigarettes have been concerned about the effect of the new restrictive policies would have on Churchills (see previous threads).

May I suggest that not all who enjoy a cigarette are "nervous chain-smoking cigarette puffers"; perhaps that is the situation in which they find themselves. Cigarette smoking was banned not only in the casino, but also in any public area.

Plewes, were you on QV or QM2?

Again, I lend my support in preserving Churchill Lounge as a cigar/pipe lounge, even if that means I have no social setting in which to smoke a cigarette.

Of course, Churchills will only last so long...pipes and cigars will be next. And after that?

Salacia

Can't believe I'm going to say this  but it would be useful to get the views of a non-smoker who has just sailed on the new rules as well. Is everything far better on board? Are there places that you now go which you didn't before? An increase in smoking on balconies?

See, us smokers aren't necessarily only self-interested :D

I'm guessing you were on the QV. In all fairness, please don't blame the smokers, blame Cunard. If you weren't notified before your voyage of the new policy, you should have complained. The rest of us have been notified ahead of time but actually have no option other than Churchills. As said, many smokers have said that Churchills should not be the only public option for smokers but it obviously is. Logically there should be another statement but this is pretty much where Cunard left it.

Hi. I am a non-smoker, but I have not yet sailed Cunard, so I don't meet your criteria, but I would love to hear from a non-smoker who does meet your criteria and will answer your question, as I would love to do a crossing on the QM2 combined with another non-Cunard cruise that interests me (and some land touring) and I am very concerned about the smokiness onboard.

If there are new rules which will help...great, and if the new rules don't help, I would like to know that, too (from non-smokers).

Oh, dear, I see I have posted to a QV thread. Are the new rules specific to the QV or also to the QM2?

Hi Mad Scientist & Oceans and Rivers,

I too would like to know if it is possible for travelers to avoid smoke and still enjoy all of the dining and entertainment options. Is Cunard able to get the smell of smoke out of the cabins after a smoker disembarks? Has balcony smoking increased to the detriment of all?

I wrote to Cunard asking if it is possible to enjoy a smoke free cruise. No Reply.

I posted these questions on another forum and was advised to cruise Oceana or Celebrity.

Does this equal "Stay away from Cunard"?

"Has balcony smoking increased to the detriment of all?"

This one really bothers me, a balcony IS OUTSIDE! Why all the complaining, they are smoking OUTSIDE. Smokers are banned from smoking inside and now you want to complain about smoking outside as well??? A bit too self centered for my taste!

Hi,

I am a non-smoker, just off QV. I'm afraid I only have the experience of one previous cruise to compare with (under the old rules). I would honestly say there were far more people in the casino during the cruise I have just left than on the previous one but the small bar area was less used. In the evenings extra chairs and tables were placed just outside the Churchill Lounge (over the quiots area) so that people could spill out on to the deck there. The door to the lounge was jammed open with a chair. This area was never full but people were always using the area in the evening. I walked through to use the door a few times and the smell was not unbearable at all.

I can't remember if there was smoking in the pub before as I didn't go in last time. This trip it was generally very well used indeed, often hard to find a seat at all.

As far as the balconies are concerned, we were forced inside only once by a cigar near by (I'm sorry, I really can't bear cigar smoke at all), I never noticed any cigarette smoke on the balcony. We used our balcony quite a lot - certainly far more than anyone else around us.

The room was perfectly smoke free as usual - no problem. I did occasionally notice a slight smell walking past other staterooms, but not that bad.

Hope this helps,

Sarah
