Tortola Maybe a Jeep Safari Excursion or Renting 4x4 or taxi service

Does anyone have any comments? We are trying to decide on what to do for our 7 am to 2 PM? Looking towards exploring the island. A ship Jeep Excusion cost is $79 per person for 3 hours that includes drive on and off road and a stop at a beach for a complimentary drink and an hour of beach time before heading back to the ship. There are 4 couples in our group so if we choose rentals we'd probably need to get two 4x4's to be comfortable. I've rearched and found maps and a road tour description on bvi.com (appears similar to the Loop Road on Bar Harbor). Is the island safe for travel on your own and would we have any problems navigating around and finding the must see places and personalizing our stops? Any comments on rental companies (there prices seem fairly close $45 - 80 depending in the type of 4 x 4 plus the $10 temporary license fee) appear most open by 9 am. It appears only a few rentals are close to the dock at Town Road do the others deliver to the dock or must you take a taxi to their location? Another choice would be to get a private taxi any comments on what the fee would be to cater to us for few hours of touring and beach time?
