woodofpine Posted May 10, 2010 #2 Share Posted May 10, 2010 We have seen Ephesus:D and surrounds so were wondering whether it is possible to walk from the port into Izmir to see the Agora maybe a museum and visit the Kameralti market. Or should we get a guide to show us the sights? We walked from the port to the Kameralti bazaar. We returned by cab. The walk was maybe half hour including a stroll along the upper waterfront and an ATM stop. There are carriages offering tour rides too. If I were to do it again, I'd probably cab both ways - or cab to Konak Square then walk to the bazaar (a few blocks). Cabs charged 10 eu per cab from Kameralti. We did not go the agora however the cabbies seemed very tourist friendly (if not too English literate) so I think you could easily get about on your own if you're inclined. Izmir is an attractive place to approach by ship, laying below steep low mountains. It is large (8 million pop.), sprawling, and non-descript otherwise. Kemeralti was interesting with good shopping. The caravanserie-han building is noteworthy with plenty of shops and an interior courtyard serving tea and food. The second floor includes craftman (mainly jewelers) making stuff being retailed below. Our day in Izmir was only 6 hours, but for a longer day there is a beach resort at Cesme about 50 miles away - and there are towns around the outer bay that are accessible by public ferry from Izmir.
