Boston cruise terminal

Does anyone know if there is public transportation from the cruise terminal to downtown and if so how close it is to where the ships dock?

Yes - the Silver Line Bus SL2 goes to the Black Falcon Terminal - $2/pp (exact change I think - $bills or coins) http://www.mbta.com/ The Silver Line will take you to South Station where you can transfer to the Red Line (direction Alewife) to go to Park St, which is the start of the Freedom Trail. Where do you want to go in Boston?

Thanks for the info. I am just trying to put together an itinerary which includes some sightseeing and fun bars. Any suggestions?

Everyone always asks about the Cheers bars - the original one and the one that looks like the TV set. I don't know much about either of them - they sound more touristy than "fun", but who knows.

 

I gather from another thread that you are a group of 6 seniors. What kinds of sightseeing are you interested in? Did you consider the Old Town Trolley (more expensive, but it will take you around to all the points of interest and a few bars, I'm sure).

Did the trolley before and the Harbor boat ride. Maybe we will just visit the witches of Salem?

1.Salem is fun. House of Seven Gables, etc. Take the scenic ferry or commuter rail there. I do not recommend driving. Boston has a great ghost tour, too, if that's what you are looking for.

 

2.The tours of Fenway are great. They are offered on days when there is no game.

 

3.The Fanuel Hall area is your best bet for a fun bar. Lots of outside seating and water views if you head toward the waterfront. Cheers is nothing but a tourist trap. Steer clear of it unless that's your thing. The real one is tiny and crowded and full of t-shirts. lol

The original Cheers bar ( http://www.cheersboston.com/pub/main_home.html) is on Beacon Street across from the Public Garden. The only thing filmed there were exterior shots. The downstairs bar looks nothing like the TV show, however, they have recently re-done the upstairs to resemble the show. There is also the replica at Quincy Market. They are both very touristy but I think the original is still cool to check out and the food is pretty good.

 

If you want a bar like no other, then check out the bar at the Top of the Hub on top of the Prudential Tower (http://www.topofthehub.net/index.html). It's 52 stories up and on a clear day you can see over 100 miles! The Top of the Hub can be a pricey restuarant but the bar cost the same as just about any other in the city.

The Union Oyster House is just down the street from Faneuil Hall. Oldest restaurant in US. Lots of history and easy to get to.
