Glasgow, Scotland

Just stumbled on this thread.

Ayr has a 'fairly' nice high street but not all that interesting. Some parts of the town are getting a bit run down.

In the days before air travel, its where Glasgow people went on holiday.

There are some nice traditional pubs, but to be honest (IMHO) it is not the most interesting of towns.

The frequent train to Glasgow Central takes about 1 hour. That brings you into the heart of the city with most of attractions close at hand.

Hi cruising nut

As AlaskanB said Ayr is a small town about 40 minutes away from Glasgow by a very reliable and inexpensive train journey, however Ayr is in the very heart of "Burns" (Famous Scottish Poet Robert Burns) country there are various monuments about the area to him including the Burns Museum at nearby Alloway.

Also nearby is Culzean Castle and Country Park, within the Castle is the "Eisenhower" Room where the former President Eisenhower stayed on a visit to Scotland.

Ayr has numerous restaurants and pubs worth a visit while in the town.

I am sure you will find something to do to enjoy your visit to Ayr.

Culzean Castle looks very interesting. The problem seems to be that it is difficult to get there on your own - 2 different buses or a train & a bus plus a mile walk. Directions from the castle's website:

By bus

Stagecoach number 60/360 (Ayr to Girvan via Maidens) stops at the entrance to Culzean Country Park on the A719. There is a one-mile downhill walk to the Castle/Visitor Centre from the Country Park entrance.

By train

First ScotRail Glasgow/Newcastle–Stranraer/Ireland line stops at Maybole railway station, 4 miles from Culzean Castle. From Maybole railway station take the Stagecoach bus number 60/360 (Ayr to Girvan via Maidens), which stops at the entrance to Culzean Country Park on the A719. There is a one-mile downhill walk to the Castle/Visitor Centre from the Country Park entrance.

Hi Diebroke

The bus fare is approx £5.00 and a one way taxi fare is approx£25.00 one way, bearing in mind most taxis can take 3 or 4 passengers.

Bearing in mind Scottish weather the mile walk when you arrive/depart if using the bus you could get rather wet if raining.

I would suggest you try the roll call for your particular cruise and see if anyone else is arranging/interested in visiting Culzean Castle and if so you could make suitable travelling arrangements.

There are companies who will provide private transport in what we call minibuses that take upto 15 passengers.
