referee Posted August 15, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2010 We will be heading to the MR this coming November for the first time, and I'm still a bit confused. We have one excursion so far planned with RCCl, but , we want to do the rest on our own. Do we bring pesos to pay for everything? Do we bring them from home, or get them at atm? Can we still pay in dollars? Thanks
MSN-Travelers Posted August 15, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 15, 2010 We will be heading to the MR this coming November for the first time, and I'm still a bit confused. We have one excursion so far planned with RCCl, but , we want to do the rest on our own. Do we bring pesos to pay for everything? Do we bring them from home, or get them at atm? Can we still pay in dollars? Thanks This is a hotly debated issue and I don't wish to start another USD vs. Mexican Peso bebate. To answer your questions: US Dollars are accepted in nearly all situations at the ports-of-call that you will stop at. It may be more convienent to have pesos at times. Pesos are readily available at ATM's. Most people seem to book excursions independently online before they leave home and payment, often with discounts, is collected via credit card or paypal at the time you book the excursion. Taxi drivers, bus drivers and beach vendors often offer a 10:1 exchange rate vs. the actual international rate. If this matters to you, then it is a good idea to have pesos for those situations. Enjoy!
gomexico Posted August 16, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 16, 2010 Pesos. Currency laws changed in Mexico recently and its tougher for Mexicans to exchange US$ for pesos ... or depoit US$ into a Mexican bank account. If you try to use a foreign currency in the country not only is it disrespectful it becomes troublesome for the people you're trying to give it to. ATM machines are everywhere you'll be traveling and they offer the best rates of exchange you'll get, and maybe that's what you should use to draw funds from your bank account ... in Pesos.
