PreCruise Package to Lake Lucerne

My wife and I are going on the Viking Helvetia in June 2011, we would like take a 2-3 day stay in Lake Lucerne before the cruise. Would you suggest we take the package offered by Viking or should we make our own arrangements? I am finding the hotel prices in Lucerne and Basel very expensive.

We're going from Amsterdam to Basel in May the to Lake Lucerne. We booked the Waldstaetterhof Swiss Quality Hotel for two nights for 446CF (about $446) including all taxes fees, etc. It's right across form the RR station. The train is about 50 euroeach for first class form Basel. It's much less expensive than Vikings surcharge.
