NCl Jewel Deck 5 vs. Deck 8 ?

Looking at the deck plans for Jewel on Deck 5 if your cabin is at the front of the ship you will probably be under the casino. Deck 5 cabin aft would be under the dining room...not so bad, not open for late night. On Deck 8 all would be fine above you. (Mainly cabins on Deck 9.)

@switzypooh -

I can't imagine a price difference that large just for being three decks higher. There's got to be something else. Are both cabins in the same category? Do you have cabin numbers, so that you can compare location on each deck? Would both cabins have a picture window, or would the cheaper one have just a port hole? Is the view obstructed in the cheaper cabin?

I think some of the cabins on deck 8 are obstructed view. Thats where the lifeboats are. We had a sheltered balcony cabin on deck 8 forward and the lifeboats were just a few cabins back from us.

We were in an obstructed view outside cabin on deck 8 of the Jewel and really liked the location. The lifeboats outside of the window really don't bother us and we like being mid ship and right down the hall from the Blue Lagoon to get a.m. coffee. I just booked the same cabin for a cruise on the Jewel in May and excited about the new Caribbean itinerary out of NY.

Those are all new cruises I see. I am on the Jewel Bahamas cruise on Apiril 24 and up until now we were to be the last cruise before the MAY 2011 drydock. Now this dry dock would have been in addition to the December azipod emergency drydock in 2010.

I have to say that I was a little concerned being the last cruise prior to drydock and was hoping that when they did the recently scheduled December drydock that they would be able to cancel the May one. Maybe that is what is happenning now!!! GREAT!!!!!!

I guess the saying is true "If you can dream it, you can achieve it" LOL

Please tell me...anyone...that the May drydock is cancelled....please!!!!

As far as I know the dry dock coming up for the Jewel about Nov. 8 is only to fix the azipod problem, but if it isn't fixed we will be left high and dry for Dec. 5 sailing. As for the May dry dock, don't know and they never tell you what takes place when a ship goes into dry dock (regarding repairs, refitting, etc.)

I was happy to read the comments about deck 8! DH actually preferred the picture windows as opposed to the port holes and we needed connecting cabins... I think the only deck left for our sailing was Deck 8, aft. We ended up switching our reservations from NCL to an online agent this last week due to a good offer with OBCs which helped take a bit of the pinch off the extra $$$.

If you're going to be on Deck 8, do not take the forward 2 rooms on either port or starboard side as the echo from the Promenade Deck which wraps around beneath them is very loud. Otherwise I would stay on Deck 8 aft. I happened to stay briefly in 8008 and was happy I upgraded to a balcony. I was supposed to stay in an obstructed view on the same deck. Just study the deck plans wisely but definitely go for Deck 8 because it's better location wise overall. :)
