teemc13 Posted October 28, 2010 #1 Share Posted October 28, 2010 Is it possible to book something to take me to both some ruins (probably dz) AND spend some time in Merida? Last time in Progresso I took a cruise-provided excursion and had a lot of extra time but it was spent at the port shops. I'd really like to make the most of my time in Progreso this go-round. Ruins, sight-see in Merida and local lunch. Is this too much and make it back to the ship on time?? Any suggestions?
hdawson Posted October 28, 2010 #2 Share Posted October 28, 2010 I think AutoProgreso offers this combo tour. From what I've read, it doesn't allow much time in Merida. I always spend the day in Merida.
WilliamLawson Posted October 28, 2010 #3 Share Posted October 28, 2010 The problem with combining Merida with other things is the time factor! The traffic getting in and out of Merida chews up a fair bit of that limited time you have in the area.
teemc13 Posted November 4, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted November 4, 2010 Ok, after much research we've opted to spend the day in Merida and skip the ruins this time. Any good suggestions for lunch? We want "authentic local" cuisine possibly somewhere on the Paseo de Montejo but not somewhere too touristy or expensive. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! hdawson Posted November 4, 2010 #5 Share Posted November 4, 2010 I like Porto El Peregrino on Calle 57 between Calle 60 & 62. Pretty courtyard restaurant and very good food and reasonable. Not on Paseo Montejo though. Pollo Pabill is very good. Very good service. I've eaten there 3 or 4 times and never disappointed.
teemc13 Posted November 4, 2010 Author #6 Share Posted November 4, 2010 Thanks for the suggestions. Has anyone tried La Chaya Maya? Saw some decent reviews on it and it's real close to the square....
hdawson Posted November 4, 2010 #7 Share Posted November 4, 2010 Not sure of your review site but there are restaurant reviews on http://www.yucatantoday.com Maybe that's where you read it, if not, check it out.
WilliamLawson Posted November 6, 2010 #8 Share Posted November 6, 2010 Chaya Maya has received rave reviews - it's on Calle 62 about a block or two from the Plaza Grande (main square). Note the ladies making the tortillas fresh right there. My favorite restaurant for traditional Yucatecan food is La Tradicion on 60 street across from the US Consulate. http://www.lawsonsyucatan.com/2010/03/30/la-tradicion-yucatecan-restaurant/ http://www.lawsonsyucatan.com/2007/11/15/la-tradicion-revisted/ http://www.lawsonsyucatan.com/2007/07/11/la-tradicion-yucatecan-restaurant-2/

We are planning to take a cab to the Dzibilchaltun Ruins, hoping to arrive there by 8-8:30. Then from there, head to Merida to explore and have lunch. Will be contacting cab companies to see what our options are.
