dis2cruise Posted November 11, 2010 #1 Share Posted November 11, 2010 Ugh I forgot to purchase an insurance policy. We have no existing medical problems can I purchase insurance from aaa or will it be a premium price since my cruise is 3 1/2 weeks away?
sirwired Posted November 11, 2010 #2 Share Posted November 11, 2010 No need to purchase through AAA. There are other policies that will probably cost less (or be more comprehensive) from 3rd-party providers. Policies this close to sailing date do not cost more. What does happen is that any benefits you get from purchasing early disappear. This usually includes a pre-ex waiver, default protection, and sometimes some free coverage upgrades. insuremytrip.com and tripinsurancestore.com are two sites that other members have reported as being helpful when choosing among 3rd-party policies. cruiseco Posted November 11, 2010 #3 Share Posted November 11, 2010 The policies offered through your local AAA office can be good deals. Each AAA Club negotiates with the various major third-party insurers to design a co-branded plan that almost always has equal or better coverage at a very good price. For example, AAA NorCal might be offering an Access America plan and AAA SoCal might be offering one from Travel Guard. Due to their huge amount of business they'll be bringing to the chosen insurer they can negotiate the best available benefits/premiums for their members. Sometimes they even get a plan that's not age-rated so seniors can get a big savings. This is similar to the deals other membership-based organizations get for their members such as USAA that you see mentioned here quite often that offers a custom plan through Travel Insured. However, since no plan is right for everybody, you really need to investigate other options. Saving a few bucks on the premium is useless if the plan doesn't cover what you need covered. But definitely include the AAA offering in the mix.
