10% off coupon credit

After my last cruise, Carnival issued 10% off coupons to everyone in our party. When I booked my April cruise, I was told that the 10% off would be given to me as a ship board credit (since I had to mail in the coupon to get the credit and by the time they got the coupon the final payment date had passed). But when I talked to Guest Relations on Monday they told me I could only get the discount credited back to my credit card, they could not issue it as a ship board credit.

 

Has anyone else had experience with this? Should I have pushed for ship board credit?

I just used a 15% coupon (problems on another cruise). My trip was PIF and yes they gave me a credit on my Discover card that showed up the next day after talking to them.
