deltahog Posted December 12, 2010 #1 Share Posted December 12, 2010 It's the only location in Merida/Progreso (says it's 15 min outside Merida) listed in the "1,000 Places to See Before You Die" book. Anyone ever been there? What is it? From the entry, doesn't appear to be much more than a hotel. Is it worth a visit? Also, my title says "Kanchatel" but I think it is Katanchel. WilliamLawson Posted December 13, 2010 #2 Share Posted December 13, 2010 You are correct; the haciendas name is Katanchel. It was a spectacular hacienda restored as a luxury hotel. However, it suffered extreme damage from hurricane Isidore (I think it was that one) several years ago and is no longer operating, to the best of my knowledge. It really was spectacular. If you want a look at a great hacienda cum hotel, have a peek at the Hacienda Xcanatun, on the Progreso-Merida highway (Xcanatun exit). Ask if they can show you a room and perhaps have a meal in their dining room. Very much worth a look if you enjoy luxury accomodations!
WilliamLawson Posted December 17, 2010 #3 Share Posted December 17, 2010 Additional note - just stopped by there today and it is in fact no longer operating. Just a sign that says Private Property and Beware of Dog, although no canine was present. Scratch that one off your list!
