Music City Posted January 21, 2011 #1 Share Posted January 21, 2011 I'm thinking about taking the 1/31 sailing of the Sky for a cheap winter getaway and I've never been to Grand Bahamma Island. I'm not much of an excursion person because I like to do my own thing. I've been to Nassau several times and find it pretty boring with not much to do other than the Straw Market or Atlantis, so... Any ideas or information someone can offer will be appreciated.
SteelerCruiser Posted January 22, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 22, 2011 This is Freeport and when we have Freeport on the iteniary we like to take a Taxi/van into the town called Our Lucaya. the ride will run you $5pp each way. There are shops, a small straw mkt area, a casino, and our Favorite a Beautiful Clear water beach. The water is pretty calm and no charge to use. Although you can rent water toys and such from the stand on the beach but no chatge just to use the beach.
gkrnjlr Posted January 24, 2011 #3 Share Posted January 24, 2011 If you're willing to spend the money - take the Jeep excursion that NCL offers. I usually refuse to pay that much per person for an excursion but it was fantastic. I went on a cruise with a friend and we really enjoyed it. We got to go see the island and get out of the overcrowded tourist areas. We even got to learn about some of the history and such. Very interesting. cruiseapril Posted January 25, 2011 #4 Share Posted January 25, 2011 We did the same as Steeler Cruiser and had a good day at Our Lucaya. It's about 10 miles from the pier, so we got to see a bit of Grand Bahama. Also- in Nassau we went to the Sheraton Cable Beach on our own with a day pass. Nice beach, good pools and facilities. Music City Posted January 25, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted January 25, 2011 Thanks for the replies. I wasn't sure whether Freeport was the only port in Grand Bahama. Carnival lists it on their intineraries as Freeport while NCL lists it as Grand Bahama. I'm taking my 83 year old mother on the the NCL Sky 4 day and we're usually limited to what we can do since she doesn't like paying for excursions either. Her range is limited, slow and she tires quickly, so I bought her a mobility scooter. That's not the easiest thing to transport around, though. Going to Our Lucaya sounds good, but I'm not sure about the scooter or how long she would last if she didn't have it. I assume there is not much near the port itself? I assume there is not much near the port itself? not much in the port area.....but I have read on here that the some of taxi/vans will let you dis assemble the scooter and load it into the van to take it to the port. You may have to request this and wait a few minutes but I would't think you will much of a problem. Have fun and enjoy!!!
