Grand Turk Reef and Rays excursion with 5-year-old?

I am looking for some opinions about doing the Reef and Rays excursion on Grand Turk with a five-year old (he is turning 5 just a week before our cruise). From what I gather a boat takes us to a reef for snorkeling off the boat then takes us to a beach where we enter the water to see the rays, correct? Not concerned about the second part but is the first (snorkeling off a boat) a bit too much to ask of a five-year-old? The min. age is listed as 5. He is a great swimmer in the neighbor's pool but has no experience snorkeling (aside from wearing a mask in the bathtub). Has anyone done this excursion? Any advise? Should we just do the rays and not the reef? The reason we chose the combo (reef and rays) is because it mentions a chance to see a nurse shark and barracuda - something we all want to see.
