Shopping?

Traveling on CArnival in February with a stop in Progreso. I am looking for a nice tooled leather purse if they make them anymore and also decent silver jewelry. How is the shopping for these items in Progresso? I don't know if I want to give up beach time for a trip into Meridia to shop.

There is an excellent leather store right at the port stores before you go into town. The prices are negotiable and bartering is the order of the day. They will be happy to do custom tooling for you. There are also seveal leather stores in Progreso off the main drag. Ask the Autoprogreso employee on the bus taking you into town for locations. Also in Merida just a couple of blocks off the main square there is a street that has several leather shops.
