How Is The Island After The Hurricane?

If anyone has been there recently, how is the island? Is it in good shape or still destroyed? Have not heard much about it except for when the hurricane destroyed 90% of the island.

We were there in December. It is recovering, but a lot of hotels and businesses were still shut down or only partially open. The main tourist attractions (Turtle Farm, "Hell", shopping, etc.) were pretty much up and operating as were the snorkel and scuba excursions.

It will be our first time there -- how is the 7 Mile Beach area. We were just thinking of taking a taxi there, and enjoying the beach and possibly some food/drinks -- is that a good idea? Any particular area we should go to or place to get our drinks/food?

The island is slowly getting back to normal. A lot of the hotels are opening up as well as the car rental places, restaraunts, etc. The touristic corridor is pretty clean but still show a few reminders of Ivan.

As far as what beach to go to, I would reccomend sea Grape Beach. It is away from the condos and hotels (Just past the Public Beach). They have water sport rentals, lockers, towels, a bar & Grill (Caloco Jacks) on site. A couple of days a week they even have live steele drum music.

The taxi ride down is $4.00 pp each way. There are always plenty of taxis waiting to take you back at the end of the day.

It's a fun day at the beach!icon7.gif

I second the Sea Grape suggestion. Great spot to hang out.

The island is slowly coming back. Many trees are still down, whole areas are wiped out. But many tourist areas are clean and coming back.

  • 2 weeks later...

We just returned from our cruise and were in Gr.Cayman on March 2. It was very sad to see the damage that was incurred by the hurricane, as I'm sure it was very beautiful before all the trees were blown down. The recovery is amazing, considering the devastation. The shopping areas are up and running, as well as the excursions. We had a great time at Stingray City and snorkeling at Coral Reef through our tour with Nativeway. (Sheldon & Charlie were great guides, and our group was small -- only 12 of us so we had lots of personal attention). We had lunch at Hammerheads on the water, and shopped afterwards. Seemed to us like things were pretty much back to normal, other than the obvious lack of foilage and some buildings under construction or abandoned. This was our first trip to Gr.Cayman so we can't compare the island pre & post hurricane, but we weren't lacking in things to do. Hope this helps.
