Smoking on Carnival

Carnival seems to be one of the few cruiselines that allows smoking in a large number of public areas and cabins on its ships. I just found that out after I have booked my cruise for this summer.

I am still far away from the cruise date that I can cancel the booking without a penalty and I am reconsidering...

For people who have traveled carnival before how big of a nuisance has it been for you? I am more concerned about the rooms and lounges. If we find out that our room smells of tobacco smoke, would they entertain a request to put us in another room? Has anybody tried this before? We are travelling with a baby and I'd like to avoid any exposure to smoke.

Well, after 15 cruises we finally got a cabin that reeked of smoke. I mentioned it to our attendant and she immediately brought in the ozone machine. She said she had already washed the walls and would be happy to get the carpet shampooed if we needed it. The machine did the trick so we didn't need anything else. She followed up with us a couple times to be sure we were happy.

I didn't like that most of the lounges allowed smoking but there was plenty to do each evening so we really didn't miss the music, etc. I tried sticking my head in the sports bar once and I literally couldn't breathe, the smoke was so bad.

Do I wish that Carnival would change their smoking policy? Yes!! Would I avoid Carnival because of it? Nope. For the most part we were able to avoid the smokers and had a fabulous cruise.

If you search the forums, you will find dozens of very recent threads on this subject. You'll just hear the same things as was stated in those threads, here.

the odds that you occupy a previous smokers room is small, and that they actually smoked in your room is smaller.

but stats don't matter if you get one.

they do an excellent jof of eliminating the odor with ozone machines.

have yet to smell smoke in my cabin in any cruise i've been on.

as far as the rest of the ship, there are more non smoking areas than smoking areas.

We had a hard time on the Fantasy last summer. There were smokers in the cabin next door (we were OV) and it really bothered us. The connecting door was a conduit for the smoke. There was a significant smoke odor in much of the rest of the ship as well.

We had a really nice time on the cruise and are giving Carnival another shot this summer on a different ship. If the smoke situation is the same, we will stick with other lines in the future.

How many non-smoking Piano bars does Carnival have?

How many non-smoking Casinos does Carnival have?

For many non-smokers this is a real problem.

After dozens of cruises on Carnival, I can gratefully say that I have never had a room that smelled of smoke. Now, that can not be said for public areas. On the Fantasy the piano bar is in the hallway outside the dining room. The smoke will permeate the hallway there so we learned to just go around the other direction (it's a split hallway that circles the atrium). The casino on the Miracle was awful (as are all casinos on CCL ships because their ventilation system is non-existent) and you had to walk through it to get to the other side of the ship (or go up and over, which we also learned to do). I am not "sensitive" nor "allergic" to smoke, I just absolutely hate the way it smells so try to avoid it at all costs.

OP, if you're a gambler you'll likely be in trouble in the casinos. But, you wouldn't have the baby in there anyway. I think you'll be ok, as there are far more areas on a ship to avoid cigarette smoke than there are to be exposed.

Yes Carnival allows smoking in some of the bars on the ships and certain other places including the staterooms as long as they are not the new spa rooms that a few ships have. I have cruised with many people that are non-smokers or have quit and they had no complaints. Now none of these non smokers were of the militant non smoker group that freak if they get a small wiff.

If Carnivals smoking policy that is posted on their website doesn't meet with your approval you may want to consider other cruise lines that are less tolerant of people that do smoke or you may consider cruising out of CA where I understand that the ship is much more restrictive

As was stated in many many smoking threads including this one the room stewarts will come in and redo your room including shampooing the carpets and changing your bedding if you feel you need it. You on the other hand can help yourself by researching the stateroom and getting a non-connecting room, a balcony up towards the bow of the ship or even better a spa cabin on a ship that has them

Or we could try to change the smoking policy on Carnival to make it a little more friendly toward non-smokers and more in line with the rest of the Cruise industry.

I think most cruisers are non-smokers.

This is my just my opinion as a non-smoker who loves Carnival.

We cruised on the Carnival Paradise a few years ago when she was smoke free and LOVED it!! When CCL stopped having a smoke-free ship, we switched to Princess. I am really surprised that CCL seemed to be in the forefront on this issue 10 yrs ago and now they have slid to the back. I'm in KY (tobacco country) and all our government and office buildings and resteraunts are smoke-free (at least in my area). I'm hoping CCL will reconsider its policies soon.

This summer we are on the Fantasy (chosen for the close port) and like the OP I am really concerned about the smoke. (I was originally excited about the piano bar but from the previous posts it sounds like I may not be spending time there.) In fact, smoke is my main concern about coming back to CCL. This cruise (for 2) is not our big summer family vacation, so I just couldn't spend the $ it would require to fly or sail a different line this time. So we will give CCL another try.

That being said, I want to take the whole family on a cruise next year, and I have tentatively selected a couple of CCL cruises as options, but I'm not choosing a line or ship until after we see how the smoke is on the Fantasy this summer.

Why should they? You can't smoke in most places on the boat. Get over yourselves.

I plan on bringing lots of clothing and also planning on doing laundry a time or two so I don't have to smell the smoke on my clothing. I don't plan on missing anything I want to see or do because of smoke even though I detest it. I'm one of those people who would love the whole ship to be non smoking. However having said that, I have chosen Carnival, understand that it has smoking allowed, and will not make a big deal about it.

We've never smelled any kind of smoke odor in our stateroom and as an ex-smoker I am astute to it.

Carnival's smoking policies do vary a bit ship by ship and it all depends on what lounges you want to use.

I believe the lounge where they have Karaoke is always non-smoking.

As far as I know all the piano bars are smoking (although the piano bar on the Splendor was non-smoking for a while it is now only non-smoking at the actual bar part of the lounge, but that can change.)

Our last cruise they had a section of the casino smoke-free but the casino is so small I don't think it made much difference other than having a smoker next to you.

We never had any issues but avoided the disco, casino, piano bar, and well, the cigar bar.

On the Carnival Dream the casino is almost totally non-smoking and the only other indoor smoking lounges are the piano bar and the disco.

What ship have you booked?

We are booked on Splendor. That ship seems to have a much better smoking policy than the rest of the ships. But I am not looking for just a single cruise. I stopped sailing on HAL because they wouldn't enforce their smoking policy and I am a little allergic to smoke. I hope I don't have to eliminate Carnival from my options too.

Uh, Princess also allows smoking in cabins and on balconies. There might be a few more venues that are non-smoking, but no real change in smoking policies between Carnival and Princess. Unlike compared with RCL, no smoking in cabins, or Celebrity, no smoking in cabins or on balconies.

Some American Cruise Lines seem to be behind the times when it comes to their smoking policy.

Most of the Western world has moved forward on the smoking situation.

1. There is only ONE "American" cruise line.....

2. Many more cruise lines worldwide permit smoking than do not.

3. ALL cruise lines leaving from the U.S. permit smoking and most from European ports....

Hmmm, you might want to check the statistics on smokers again......Many countries considered a part of the "Western World" have a much higher percentage of smokers than we do, for sure.....

Besides, as long as it is a legal activity, folks need to just leave it alone. We've been divided in smoking and non-smoking areas...and as long as everyone watches their personal boundary, there's room for everyone.

Those nonsmokers have other options when making cruise choices....nobody forces anyone to cruise on Carnival.

As a nonsmoker who loves Carnival/I can tell you your stats are off. A recent poll on CC showed that.

If you search, you'll find it.....

Here's one from October:

Tobacco smoke is not an allergen. If you are suffering an allergy incident on a cruise ship, it's something else....not smoking.
