Water taxi to Ambergris Caye?

Last time we were in Belize we did a nice snorkel tour to Ray ally and had lunch on Key Caulker, but there was a lot of wasted time standing around waiting. This time we are thinking about taking the San Pedro Express Water taxi to Ambergris Caye to spend a relaxing day in San Pedro with some beach time and some snorkeling. Has anyone done this? Any highlights? Problems? Any info will help us. Our other choice is to do a snorkeling tour that CCL offers, so we don't have to take the tender into the city. We want to make the best use of our time and have a memorable day.

We haven't done it. We flew over for the day.

But while visiting AC for a week we talked with people about the water taxis. They said it's about an hour and a half ride and can be very rough. Passengers can get seasick.

But...definitely go over there. It rocks.

Depending on the ocean conditions it can be rough and take a while, which cuts time off snorkeling and enjoying San Pedro. There is a cool bar just a couple of hundred yards left from the pier I can recommend ;)
