Cayman Shore Snorkel Through Carnival vs. On Our Own

Can anyone tell me what the benefit to doing this excursion through Carnival would be? I've tried researching with the boards here (and I have been to the Eden Rock website), and as best I can tell, DH and I should be able to just walk over to the site and get on in. Is that correct? We will likely rent a locker, but other than that are there any beach/usage fees? We have our own equipment so we won't need any of that. Unless the vests are required...

The write up on Carnival's site says a guide will meet you at the pier and walk down with you. And also that with a bracelet we can come and go at our own leisure. Can't we do that anyway?

I guess I'm a little confused. Any help would be much appreciated, Thank you!!
