swimjimmom Posted May 31, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 31, 2011 What is there to do or see in Hilo once you have done the Volcano? We are a group of 5 and some have difficulty walking so the Falls are out. Any ideas would be appreciated. We will be there Friday, Oct 7 from 12 noon to 7 PM.
hexdragon Posted May 31, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 31, 2011 "difficulty walking".... I would have strongly suggested The Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Gardens if not for that... They have a steep boardwalk to go down and some uneven trails... The same with Akaka Falls... I think Rainbow Falls was accessible.

They have golf carts that will take you down if you have trouble walking (as I do). This is so beautiful.
NELSONSOFT Posted June 1, 2011 #5 Share Posted June 1, 2011 If you have trouble walking some options might be: Rainbow falls Big Island Candy Mac Nut Factory As mentioned the Botanical Gardens does have a golf cart to get you up and down the hill. Once at the bottom there is still some walking to see things. Orchid Farm Warm pond if you like to relax in the water There is also a nice drive along the coast by Kalapana Some smaller tour companies will provide a private tour that will cater to your needs. In most cases they are much less money than the cruise ship tours. Just search Google for something like "Hilo small tour company" and you should see a list of smaller tour companies that could take you around Hilo. hexdragon Posted June 1, 2011 #6 Share Posted June 1, 2011 I did not know about the golf carts. Good thing I didn't need them :p
swimjimmom Posted June 1, 2011 Author #7 Share Posted June 1, 2011 Thanks for the many ideas for Hilo. I will check into the small tour companies and see what I can find. I would love to go to Rainbow Falls and see some of the other sites. Thanks again.
hexdragon Posted June 2, 2011 #8 Share Posted June 2, 2011 I wasn't real impressed by Rainbow Falls. HTBG and Akaka Falls, now that knocked my socks off. (of course I'm jaded, living about 60 miles from Niagara falls...)

(of course I'm jaded, living about 60 miles from Niagara falls...) Couldn't agree more. I lived outside Hilo for 2 years and Rainbow Falls is not that big and it's not that exciting. Akaka falls is amazing though.
Jeff in Torrance Posted June 8, 2011 #10 Share Posted June 8, 2011 We thought that the Lyman Mission House and Museum was interesting. http://www.lymanmuseum.org/ It is only a short walk from the "farmers market," which can be reached by the free shuttle taken from the cruise dock.
