snappleman Posted August 3, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 3, 2011 Wil be on Grand Cayman during a cruise stop in November. Which would be better - Rum Point or Smith's Cove. I'll have my snorkle gear if there is snorkeling. How much would the taxi be from the pier to either place?
TurtleTagger Posted August 3, 2011 #2 Share Posted August 3, 2011 Two of my favorite spots on grand Cayman:) Smith Cove Bacadere is a short (less than $5/5 minute) taxi or bus ride from the downtown George Town. Nice small beach with shade trees on the outskirts and picnic tables. No amenities other than a restroom and outside rinse shower. Must bring your own food and beverages. Snorkeling is OK, but limited. Some friendly fish and healthy Elkhorn coral to the left of the rock in the center of the cove. Rum Point would be around an $80/45 minute taxi ride there, but you would have to make arrangements for the return trip in advance. There is no regular taxi or bus service there. Best to rent a car for the day, it would be cheaper. Full service beach club with amenities (Chairs, water sports rentals, hamock, volleyball, etc...) and food and drink. Much better snorkeling in you head off to the point or walk farther up the beach. Good info on where to snorkel in the area found here http://snorkelblog.tumblr.com/ under the Rum Point entries. Snorkeling right off the beach is lackluster.
snappleman Posted August 4, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted August 4, 2011 thanks. I may just go to Smith's Cove due to the closeness.
