Miami Car Rental

Does anyone have any experience with car rentals at the Port of Miami (i.e., waiting for the shuttle bus to the car rental pickup location?) We want to drive from Miami to Fort Myers after our cruise in January. My Mom in wheelchair - I'm thinking getting a cab might be easier. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
