newgirl2 Posted November 20, 2011 #26 Share Posted November 20, 2011 Well I am a happy camper! First, thanks to everyone for tips & advice, it was all very useful. I managed to find a great deal on a car rental on Priceline.com which I have never used before but am happy I tried it! It was actually cheaper for us to rent the car for our entire stay than splitting it up 3 days pre-cruise & 2 days post cruise. I got a mid-size car (Thrifty) for 12 days for $221. picking up & dropping off near FLL (off-site). I was told a cab to or from the site would run $7.00. Now all I have to do is find a good parking garage during the cruise near POM. Any suggestions?? Thanks all! :) Lynn

MilVet913 Posted November 20, 2011 #28 Share Posted November 20, 2011 I am running into the same problem. We booked the cruise out of Miami but Southwest only flies to Ft Lauderdale. We thought we'd stay 3 days pre-cruise & rent a car to explore Miami & drop off car at the port but the cost is outrageous. I don't know what to do, cruise is booked, hotels are booked...might have to cancel entire trip! There are TWO rental car companies that DO NOT charge a drop fee from Miami to Laurerdale DOC (not airport). AVIS and BUDGET. All the others want a drop fee. When you drop the car off at the Lauderdale port location, both companies offer a free shuttle to the dock. We are flying to Miami day before our cruise in December and renting for 1 day with Avis, then dropping at the peer location without extra charge. After the cruise, we are renting a car AT the peer location for a week and dropping at MIA, again with no additional drop fees.
