Where You Can Smoke: Smoking is permitted in designated ares on open decks, in casinos and in cigar bars. Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Spirit have cigar bars. Until January 1, 2012, smoking is allowed in cabins and on balconies.

 

Where You Can't: All indoor public areas except casinos and cigar bars are non-smoking. Effective January 1, 2012, smoking will be prohibited in cabins. Cigarette smoking will still be allowed on balconies; however, cigar and pipe smoking on balconies will be prohibited ;)

 

I think starfish was speaking about open decks. On the Dawn and Star the port side of the pool deck is smoking, the starboard side non-smoking.

(There is also a video done by a newscaster here (I believe it's CBC Canada) about a year after they hit the market here in Canada. He took them to a large city to a few bars and coffee shops to get the reaction of others. Non-smokers were outraged even when told about them, just because they looked like a cigarette. )

 

 

 

 

Well put ! It really does not surprise me at all. Some people get a major case of tunnel vision, others have it so bad they can see thru a keyhole with both eyes.

In the past i had always tried to show some consideration for others, but after reading some of the narrow minded coments, i wonder, why ?? :confused:

I understand some of the objection,s due to allergies, not liking the smell .

Am i the only one hear stuck on stupid :confused: I have to ask why are you people that have such a dislike, sailing with NCL :confused: , when NCL states it is okay ?

To me that is the same as people coming on NCL, then complaing, there are people wearing blue jeans?

We went with NCL, they allow smoking on the balconies.

This issue will not be resolved here ! If you want me to respect you, you have to remember, that is a two-way street.

We just finished B2B cruises. First week was wonderful as there wasn't any smoke detected on the balcony. The second week was awful. The cabin next to us had 5 people. The 4 adults were chain smokers. They seemed to smoke 24-hours a day. The smoke was heavy all day and at night they were out on the balcony smoking, moving the chairs, and slamming the door. Our door to the balcony needed new weather stripping to keep out the smoke. The stripping was replaced which cut down on the smoke coming into our room. We were not able to use our balcony the second week, and no the wind did not dilute the smoke. We know they had the right to use their balcony for smoking but it seems we should have been able to use our balcony now and then.

 

Maybe instead of having smoking allowed on port or starboard. How about smoking allowed every other hour on the balcony. Just joking.:)

 

Today, we booked a balcony on NCL for next year. We are going to try again to have a balcony and if that doesn't work will be looking into other cruise lines.

 

This is really a touchy situation for every one and there is really no good answer for every one.

Sorry this had to happen to you guy's. Like i said in an earlier post, some people have tunnel vision ! The fact about all the noise all day and night is just downright rude ! These type of people, be they smokers, or not, can see thru a keyhole with both eyes. All they care about is themselves

They should have realized you have the right to use your balcony also.

This is where people fall down badly. There was no reason they couln't have clued in, you folk's might want to use your balcony. They should have spoke with you, or left for a while.

Personally as long as NCL has smoking on their balconies they have my business. I refuse to get up, get dressed and head up 2 flights of stairs or down 3 each time I want a cigarette. If they've stopped it in the cabins I really don't care as long as I can go as far as the balcony.

I have quite the intolerance to strong perfumed soaps, cologne, perfume or whatever some seem to bath in as well. I just quietly remove myself from the area they choose to be in. I figure if I'm the one that has the issue with it, then it is not my place to be keeper of other people.

My husband and I non-smokers. Can't stand the smell and it can cause me to have coughing fits.

 

What we do is this. We designate one or two sets of clothing for the times we know we will be around smokers. We also then designate 1 drawer for those clothes so they don't smell up the rest of our belongings.

 

For the trip home, the smoke fumed clothes are designated to the outside pocket of our luggage, again, so they don't contaminate the clothes.

 

As for areas of the ship? We just avoid the most smoke filled areas or walk quickly through them to limit the smell.

 

Overall, we realize that people are on vacation and just want to relax and have a good time. Since we primarily stick to 1 or 2 NCL ships, we have figured out where the smoking and non-smoking areas tend to be.

I have to say that I quite agree. Certain very expensive perfumes absolutely smell like bug spray to me and even sting my nose. My daughter says my brand of perfume smells bad to her but complete strangers will tell me how good it smells. Just wondering if some pro no smokers just have a heightened sense of smell? I like that pronosmokers word! LOL

Princess does have a new smoking policy going into effect in January 2012. Smoking on balconies/in cabins will no longer be allowed. For this reason we are moving to NCL.

 

I don't smoke but my partner does. We have cruised both Princess and NCL and just like you we have booked our next cruise on NCL for the same reason's you stated.

Same here, we have one booked on NCL and one on HAL that both allow smoking on balconies still.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I can't really dispute anything that you've said but I still think the more powerful and more influential lobbying group is the cigarette manufacturing bloc. I believe their influence on government far surpasses what the general public feels about the e-cigs. Just a supposition on my part. I have no facts to back it up other than the history of how government works. It's the old "follow the money" line of thought.

 

If that were true about the Cigarette manufactures having more clout then there wouldn't be so many bans on smoking in restaurants, bars, hotels etc.. Don't down play the power of the anti smoking groups

It certainly hasn't dulled my sense of smell where strong perfumes, etc., are concerned. I still smell those very well and get horrible migraines from them. I also have a problem in a very smokey enclosed space. I do smell the nicotine and smoke. Maybe I just have a special nose to be able to smell these things after so many years of smoking! ;)

I can only hope I'm sandwiched between some non-smokers. I used to think that if we book forward cabins...hoping the smokers have mid-ship or aft...we wont smell it while the ship is moving. hahaha! now if only I could get that down to a real science!

I agree but you said it better. I simply don't understand people who think that they live at Burger King and can have it all their way. This is the real world and as long as one is responsible, respectful, considerate of others, and follows the laws they should be allowed to live without being hounded, nagged, put down, treated like lesser beings, etc. If your perfume (or whatever) bothers/effects me I'll take a hike, if my smoke bothers you, well the choice is yours. Just be nice please.

The smoke emitted from the stacks is at least 75 feet off the highest desk. Maybe if they put the smokers up there they wouldn't be any problem. :p

Oh it might under the right conditions and normally it's not a concern but having a smoker close by your balcony will surely be noticeable all the time.

Well after much consideration of this post. I was thinking a few loungers up that far, gee what a good idea, no chair hogs, not overly crowded, great view ;) Then I got thinking more and I'm afraid of heights, so not such a good idea :(
