cruiseclues Posted May 5, 2004 #26 Share Posted May 5, 2004 vijoge, Yes, perhaps you're right. The CDC is concerned it can spread more rapidly on a cruise ship if it gets going. The actual facts of what has happened are below (& in more detail at the CDC site (see our homepage). Up to 3% of the ship can get a gastrointestinal illness (reported), before the CDC will designate it as requiring a CDC Disease Outbreak Investigatin. It doesn't have to hit 3% (passengers and/or crew) for it to require an Investigation. The Captain is required to report each one with 24 hours. If the CDC get too many reports from the Captain in too short of a period (or some other unusual condition), they may decide to have the Investigation anyway. Basically, the CDC tries to do their best to keep things under control. If you look at the past years, they aren't all that bad. This year is going at 3-4 times the Investigations of the largest past year. Perhaps the reporting has improved & they are being more careful...who knows? Usually, even when an Investigation is required, the vast majority of passengers & crew do not get sick. This year, the Legacy (only 107 passengers total & 22 were sick 20.54% & 4.65% of the crew) had the highest percentage sick & the Celebration was next with 18.84% of passengers, & 2.75% of crew. In both of these cases that's around 1 out of 5 sick (worst cases this year). The rest (16 others) of the cruise ships requiring investigation were around 1 out of 20 (or so) sick. The way we feel about cruising, even the worst one reported this year at about 1 out of 5 (if we knew ahead, of course), would not deter us. BAMA X 2 Posted May 5, 2004 #27 Share Posted May 5, 2004 This is the worst thread I have ever read. Talk about Doom and Gloom. Why dont ya talk about shore excursions or something?
eric-n-beth Posted May 5, 2004 #28 Share Posted May 5, 2004 BAMA X 2: Nice to see you on the boards again!! On the Sun in March they had hand sanitizer at every enterance to dinning areas. Also when you disembarked or arrived back to board the ship. I felt they did a good job of not passing germs. SHINEMAN Posted May 5, 2004 #29 Share Posted May 5, 2004 The counts submitted to the CDC tend to be less than actual since many people do not turn themselves in to sick bay. They observe that those who do, win two or three days cabin confinement which takes something away from a cruise. Lucky to receive $200 credit. Have been on two with NCL where there were breakouts and to best of my knowledge no one received anything. Probably be good to get legislation requiring cruise lines to give such credits as an inducement to maintain high standards and for passengers to turn selves in with resultant improvement in statistical accuracy. But can't you see the cruise line lobbyists at the congressmens doors about that. You can't win
BAMA X 2 Posted May 6, 2004 #30 Share Posted May 6, 2004 Eric and Beth, There were not any hand sanitizers at Costa Maya and I remember germs being passed there!
