Cozumel Pier - Walkable to San Miguel ?

We are cruising on Carnival Paradise in January 2012. When we dock in Cozumel, is it feasible to walk to downtown San Miguel? A 2 - 3 mile walk is fine as long as there are sidewalks or walkways. I am not sure which pier we will dock at but it looks like the Carnival pier furthest south would be the furthest. I have seen conflicting information stating it is anywhere from 2.5 to 5 miles south of the town center.

Yes, you can walk. There are sidewalks, but, cab fare is only about $8. In Oct I rented a car for $50 and drove around the island. It was nice seeing parts of the island I had never been to before.:)

If you go to Google Earth, you can track the route from the farthest dock to downtown. Since you're going in January, you won't have too much trouble with the humidity--in the summer I'd never attempt it. You might want to plan to take a taxi into downtown and then decide whether or not to walk back.

We've done that walk many years ago, and it is do-able. Cabs don't cost that much, so I would suggest a cab. Last year, when it was just 2 of us, I asked loudly if there were 2 people together who wanted to share a cab, and we were able to cut the price in half.
