New Orleans Hotel Suggestions

Any suggestions on a pre-cruise hotel stay in New Orleans? Looking for something somewhat close to the port, but not expensive. Only flying in the day before the cruise.

Try the La Quinta on Camp St. It is an easy walk to FQ and Bourbon Street. They have a continential breakfast in the am. You will need a cab to port, although some people have posted that they have walked. I wouldn't try it, especially with luggage. We got a rate of $67 night in Dec. Hope this helps.

Thanks Setme2sail. We are set to sail in December too. Did you do priceline on this hotel or was this their rate directly with them?

I think I booked at cheap rates or hotels.com. Check them both.

Recently stayed at the Marriott on Canal Street (Central Business District) beautiful room overlooking the river. Great view of the cruise ships. Obtained on Priceline for $82. A real bargain and would definately stay there again. The staff at this Marriott were the best!

I would suggest the Ambassador Hotel on Tchoupitoulas. It is within a mile of the pier. I have stayed there twice. When you do your search you should put in for hotels close to the downtown convention center as it is close to the pier.

We have made a few trips to New Orleans, and I will offer you my thoughts on a few of the hotels we have stayed in over the years.

 

We first stayed in the Hilton on the riverfront right next to the cruise port area, and it was a typical, sterile hotel. It is adjacent to the aquarium, and near the casino. Before Harrah's opened the Flamingo riverboat casino docked there. It is a good little walk to Bourbon Street.

 

We next stayed in the Sheraton, which was very close to Bourbon Street, and we liked it a little bit better than the Hilton. There is a Starbucks in the lobby, and it is right across the street from the Palace Cafe, which is one of our favorite places for dinner.

 

For one of my wife's business trips we got to stay in the Windsor Court Hotel. This is a first class hotel with the prices to go along with it. Thank God for business expense accounts. It is on the other side of Harrah's from the Hilton. It is almost worth a visit to the lobby just to inhale the fresh, oversize bouquet of roses. When we were there, the King of Qatar was there for a meeting, and had a whole floor of the hotel for himself and his entourage. That tells you how nice this place is.

 

Our all-time favorite, though is the International House Hotel, which is also on Camp Street. It was an awesome experience with the great flavor of New Orleans permeating all through it. We have found deals on the internet, and we have also been able to call and get decent deals just by asking and showing special interest in the Hotel. It is just around the corner from the Sheraton, and easy walking to Bourbon Street.

My wife reminded me of one other hotel: The Hyatt by the Superdome. It was awful. The room was small, and it was far away from everything but the dome. Rumor was that it was getting ready to go through a major refurbishing/remodeling, but it was horrible. Even the service was poor.
