Can you swim out to shipwrecks in Barbados without a tour?

There are tours in Barbados that have you go out on a boat and you go swim with turtles and snorkel at shipwrecks. I have read a review that says you don't need to do the tour, that you can just swim out to the shipwrecks (the wrecks at Carlisle Bay/Browne's Beach). Does anybody know if you can swim out to the shipwrecks and how far they are from shore? I wouldn't mind swimming far out but i just need to know swimming to the wrecks is possible. Thanks :)
