Cigar Bar

Most of the Cigar Bars on the Jewel class ships (ie: the Gem) are designated as the outdoor bar above the pool deck, on one side (the other side is non-smoking). So, entertainment would be whatever is happening on the pool deck below and TVs over the bar I think. It consists of a bar and several tables and is at least partially covered, but pretty much exposed to the elements. The bar is usually open, but can close later at night and you have to go inside to get a cocktail. A couple of ships (like the Epic, not sure what other ships) still have indoor cigar lounges, which are pretty much enclosed rooms with leather furniture and maybe some piped in music, with waitress service.

I miss the old indoor lounges. I know that cigarette smoking in the lounges is frowned upon by cigar aficionados, but it was a great place where the crew (smokers and non) used to congregate with the passengers late in the evening - so much fun.

Not sure which indoor cigar lounges are still open - it's not that the spaces are gone, it's that they are now non-smoking, unless they changed the rules again.. I know the Jade, Jewel, and Sun had made those spaces non-smoking. Haven't been on the Gem, but it's the same location as the old (recently non-smoking) spaces on the Jewel and Jade. Just an enclosed room (the photo pretty much shows the whole space) with waitress service from the bars outside - there is often a band or entertainer just outside in the Magnum's area that you can likely hear inside the room.

Is cigarette smoking allowed in the Cigar Bar ( referring to the Dawn mainly)?

If it's still open, you can smoke cigarettes in there (much to the disdain of cigar smokers ;)). Last time I was on the Dawn it was before they changed the smoking rules.

Is cigarette smoking allowed in the Cigar Bar ( referring to the Dawn mainly)?

From Aug. 8, 2011

Norwegian Cruise Line today announced adjustments to its smoking policy for each of the line’s 11 Freestyle Cruising ships in response to changing guest preferences. Effective January 2012, guests setting sail on a Norwegian cruise vacation are no longer permitted to smoke cigarettes in their staterooms.

Guests who are in a balcony stateroom will be permitted to smoke on the outside balcony; however, cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Ashtrays will be available for use upon request through housekeeping staff.

In an effort to diminish the presence of smoke indoors, cigarette smoking is only permitted in the casino, where ashtrays and appropriate signage will be displayed. Smoking is prohibited in all other public interior venues including all bars, restaurants, conference rooms, corridors, restrooms, staircases and landings.

Guests may utilize the enclosed cigar bars on board Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Spirit for cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking.

In addition, the policy allows guests to smoke cigarettes, cigars and pipes in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks, where designated by the appropriate signage. Smoking is not permitted near outdoor venues which serve food, in open spaces such as the jogging track, sport complex, children’s pool and in The Haven outdoor areas.

  • 1 year later...
From what I've been told there Gem has an indoor Cigar Bar called the Corona Cigar Bar (As of this month it was still operating). But is there any entertainment in there?

I know when I was researching the cigar bar on the Dawn, it holds six people, which is what your picture appears to show.

Looks about the size of a kids bedroom.

I don't think they are as big as the ones on Carnival are (or were) where they held about 50 people and had live music playing while you indulged.

Figure I'll check it out once onboard and if it is as tiny as it looks, I'll just enjoy my cigars outside the sliding door of my cabin.

the Freestyle deck on the Gem is where I go to escape the cigar haters it is the highest sun deck and very rarely is it occupied

The cigar bar is a decent size and only gets crowded after dinner I prefer to go there mid afternoon with my kindle and relax.

Have you sailed the Gem recently? We are sailing in April and would love to know if the Cigar Bar is still open!

Thanks!

we sailed last year and are sailing again in a month- I haven't read anywhere that it is closed and their policy still states that it is the only place where you can smoke a cigar indoors. It is not large and it is tucked away in a corner so I don't think there is any reason to get rid of it.
