There are 2 choices: rent in STT and take it across on the car barge to STJ or cab to red hook and car rent in STJ.

 

Both are highly debated options.

 

From the cruise terminal, Avis and Budget are both available I believe and both allow you to take the car to STJ. We are opting to rent on STT next time and take the car barge. It's about 50 each way (all passengers) and runs about every hour in the high season. Is is the most direct option.

 

Alternatively, you can cab to Red Hook, jump on the ferry to STJ (every 30 mins) and then walk across the street from the terminal to a rental location. There are many to choose from. If you do this option, I recommend doing some research on jeep rentals and booking in advance--especially if many ships are in port.
